Overall Satisfaction with Microsoft Powerpoint

My organization allows us to access the entire Microsoft 365 package which means we have access to Microsoft word, Excel, Powerpoint etc. In our organization, we use Microsoft Powerpoint to prepare presentations, helping in management strategies, communicate assessments and providing visual aids to stakeholders.
For my use case, being a Software Developer responsible for designing and developing web applications, I use Microsoft Powerpointto craft presentations for detailing objectives, communicating timelines and going over resource requirements. At the same time, it helps in summarizing technical information into digestible slides for a diverse set of audiences. Most of the Knowledge Transfer sessions which i conduct are also done using Microsoft Powerpoint.

Pros

  • Microsoft Powerpoint allows to choose from a host of templates and themes which makes it really easy to use. With the new suggestion feature, this feature has become even more powerful and helpful
  • The User Interface of Microsoft Powerpoint is quite advanced when compared to other tools in the market such as Google Slides
  • I really enjoy how easy it is to integrate media within the slides and format them for visual aid

Cons

  • The formatting tools can be better places. Right now they are a little scattered throughout the UI
  • Microsoft Powerpoint lacks the ability to draw within the slides. Its often easier to use tools like draw.io and import images
  • Apart from the suggested templates, its hard to find new templates. It is less intuitive and suggestion tool, although is pretty powerful, but can be improved
  • Helps internal teams to create and share KT sessions effectively saving time with onboarding new team members
  • Helps Stakeholders and Senior Management in making decisions quickly. Things which would have been difficult to comprehend without illustrative presentations. This saves time and money
  • Need to use it along with other tools specially when detailed analysis or information needs to be shared which slows down the process
Microsoft Powerpoint is a strong tool specially when it comes to giving presentations and visually presenting ideas. It is a great tool to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical management and staff members, helping to present ideas in a clear and concise way.
But when it comes to internal usage, Microsoft Powerpoint needs to be used along with a host of other tools to present details and adding diagrams.
Microsoft Powerpoint stacks up quite well against its competitors mentioned above. It offers better set of features which are more advanced and intuitive most of the times. It is professionally a more popular and a better choice overall.
Where it lacks is when really specific and visually attractive templates or designs are required and tools like Canva and Figma do better.
Apple Keynote is specific to Apple ecosystem and may not be the perfect tool to compare against it

Figma, Google Slides, Jenkins, Eclipse, IntelliJ IDEA, Salesforce CRM Analytics, Atom, GitHub, GitHub Copilot, Atlassian Bitbucket, Atlassian Jira, Atlassian Confluence, TeamCity, Microsoft Teams, Slack, MySQL Workbench, Apache Cassandra, Apache Maven, AWS Cloud9, Gradle Build Tool (Open Source), Microsoft SQL Server
Some specific scenarios where Microsoft Powerpoint is very well suited is giving Knowledge Transfer sessions or conducting workshops. It helps to intuitively organize information logically which facilitates in better understanding. At the same time, it is easy to incorporate hyper-links and questionnaires into the slides, making it easy to involve users.
Microsoft Powerpoint really makes it hard to present/add detailed information into the slides, making it look ugly. Any scenarios where detailed information needs to be presented is really hard with Microsoft Powerpoint.
