Overall Satisfaction with Mimecast Advanced Email Security

We use Mimecast Advanced Email Security to protect against phishing, malware, and other email-based threats. It helps us stop things like business email compromise, impersonation attacks, and malicious attachments before they reach employees' inboxes. The main business problems it addresses are reducing security risks from email threats, preventing data loss, and ensuring compliance with industry standards. It also helps cut down on the amount of junk and potentially dangerous emails that employees have to deal with, improving overall productivity. Our use case is broad; it covers inbound and outbound email security, URL protection, attachment sandboxing, and impersonation detection. Plus, it provides logging and reporting that we use for threat analysis and incident response.

Pros

  • Impersonation Prevention.
  • Attachment Blocking.
  • Threat Response / Clawback.

Cons

  • More granular role based access control.
  • Better configuration backup.
  • GUI Updates to reduce miss-clicks and administrative mistakes.
  • Before Mimecast, we handled multiple phishing-related incidents per week, each requiring security team intervention. Since implementation, phishing-related incidents have dropped by over 60%, freeing up analysts for higher-value work and reducing potential breach costs.
  • Since implementing impersonation protection, we’ve seen a 90%+ reduction in successful impersonation attacks. This prevents fraudulent transactions and reputational damage, protecting company assets.
  • Mimecast prevents 98% of SPAM emails from reaching the user's inbox and clutting their email.
The centralized admin console simplifies email security management, making it easier to configure policies, monitor threats, and review logs. The interface is intuitive, and the dashboard provides clear insights into email activity and security events. A major benefit of having a single administration console is streamlined policy enforcement across phishing protection, spam filtering, and data loss prevention. This reduces the need to manage multiple security tools separately. However, there’s a learning curve, especially for advanced configurations, and some settings feel buried within menus. Additionally, while the reporting is strong, customization options could be improved. Despite these minor drawbacks, the overall ease of management makes Mimecast a valuable security tool.
Its robust API allows seamless connections with other security tools, enhancing overall threat detection and response. We’ve successfully integrated it with our SOC provider, Closed-Loop Email Response System, and Palo Alto firewalls, enabling automated threat intelligence sharing and faster remediation. The integration process is well-documented, and Mimecast strongly supports third-party connections. This has improved security operations by centralizing email threat data and automating responses. One minor drawback is that some advanced configurations require additional fine-tuning to align with specific workflows. However, once set up, the integrations run smoothly, reducing manual effort and increasing efficiency across our security infrastructure.
Yes, we successfully migrated from Minesweeper, an on-premises email gateway, to Mimecast Advanced Email Security several years ago. The migration process was straightforward, with minimal disruption to email flow. Moving to Mimecast provided several key benefits, including cloud-based scalability, improved threat intelligence, and easier policy management compared to the legacy on-prem solution. The transition involved configuring policies, rerouting MX records, and testing security rules, all of which were well-documented and supported by Mimecast’s onboarding resources. One of the biggest advantages was eliminating the need for on-prem hardware maintenance, reducing operational overhead. The cloud-native approach also improved email security posture by enabling real-time updates and faster response to emerging threats, which wasn’t as efficient with our previous system.
Switching to Mimecast Advanced Email Security had a significant impact on our email security and operational efficiency. Compared to our previous on-prem Mimesweeper solution, Mimecast provided better scalability, automation, and threat intelligence that weren’t possible before. The shift to a cloud-based platform eliminated the need for hardware maintenance, ensuring seamless updates and improved uptime. Email continuity also improved, preventing disruptions during outages. Additionally, Mimecast’s real-time phishing, impersonation, and malware detection significantly reduced successful email threats. The centralized management console streamlined policy enforcement and reporting, making administration more efficient. Integration with our SOC, SIEM, and firewall tools enhanced threat intelligence sharing and incident response.
Proofpoint ATP offered strong threat detection and forensics, but it was more complex to manage and significantly more expensive. Microsoft 365 Defender had solid native integration with M365, but its filtering and impersonation protection weren’t as strong out of the box, requiring additional tuning. Abnormal Security excelled in AI-driven behavioral analysis, but it lacked some of the email continuity and DLP features we needed. Mimecast stood out for its robust phishing protection, easy policy management, and seamless integration with our SOC and firewall tools while keeping costs manageable.

Yes

Did Mimecast Advanced Email Security live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Mimecast Advanced Email Security go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Mimecast Advanced Email Security again?

Yes

Mimecast Advanced Email Security is well-suited for stopping phishing and impersonation attacks by detecting domain spoofing and suspicious sender behaviors. It effectively blocks malicious attachments, encrypted files, and dangerous URLs before they reach users. Additionally, it reduces spam volume, preventing inbox overload and improving productivity. Mimecast also helps prevent data loss by enforcing policies that flag or encrypt sensitive outbound emails. However, it is not ideal for advanced threat hunting, as it lacks deep forensic capabilities. It also has limitations in highly customized user workflows where more flexible automation is needed. Internal email protection is another weak point, as Mimecast primarily focuses on inbound and outbound traffic. Lastly, while it offers email encryption, organizations with complex encryption needs may require a more specialized solution.
