Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Motive is used to help our company meet compliance with the Canadian Hours of Service regulations. Much easier to use than paper or the drivers and real time dashboard allows me to see issues quickly. No issues with lost or late paper forms any more. Driver feedback for things like unsigned logs are helpful to the drivers.

Pros and Cons

App for drivers looks similar to paper log so easy to view and maintain
Real time alerts to both driver and admin helps to resolve issues quickly
Trip inspection and log tied into seamless process works well

Drivers occasionally have issues linking to truck. Usually it is not waiting the few extra seconds to confirm connection
Dashboard system on the odd occasion does not refresh in real time, causing the admin to reach out to driver to fix something that has already been resolved
Help desk response always starts with a simple suggestion that in most cases has already been tried so often takes more than one contact to get to resolution.

Return on Investment

Level of compliance has increased significantly from paper logs
Saves driver time in completing daily logs
Reduced time admins spend on auditing logs as data is neat and consistent, and some of the more basic issues are auto flagged by the app

Support Rating

Motive has become a large organization, and appears to have several levels of support. All issues are plugged into first level and for those who have used the system for some time, often the response is very basic and has already been tried.

Ease of Use

System has benefitted us with compliance to HOS regulations. Also gps location and trip data is valuable. Safety alerts for hard brake, hard acceleration and hard cornering identify cases that could be aggressive driving. Speed alerts provide some value, but back end data on posed road speed especially off of major highways is often incorrect so these events need to be reviewed. System has option to void the alert which helps to remove false ones from driver score

Reliability and Availability

System has occasional outage, but these are normally related to a specific reporting part of the system and has never effected on road accuracy and reporting for the drivers

Geotab and Samsara Vehicle Telematics

Motive is more user friendly for drivers, and admins, with clean simple to use app interface and dashboard reporting options

Likelihood to Recommend

System has the Canadian Oil and Gas cycle so is one of the few solutions if using that permit. Some remote areas of Canada with poor cell service can cause issues with updating back to the dashboard. System does seem to store and foreword so data is not lost but not always fully up to date in dashboard

Motive is our product of choice when it comes to keeping our drivers and company compliant to HOS regulations
