Overall Satisfaction with MS SharePoint / SQL

SharePoint is used by every department in our organization. We use it to store documents and create common places for wiki pages, documents, and custom lists to be edited. The rest of it is used as a central intranet for the organization to share information.
  • Intranet. SharePoint makes a great intranet to share information from a central place.
  • It's easy to easily start up new lists or wiki pages. End users can create new lists or wiki pages and add their information on the fly without having to engage the IT department.
  • Search indexing. SharePoint makes a great platform for searching all documents or files in either SharePoint or your directory structure.
  • Custom development with SharePoint is difficult. Development with visual studio for web parts is time-consuming and a black box to try to build with.
  • Error reporting and diagnostics are hard to find and hard to decipher. It is difficult to know what went wrong when an error happens.
  • Image handling is poor. The wiki could be an incredible documentation tool but because images are so difficult to upload and use, we only use it for text.
The only other alternatives to SharePoint we've tested would be regular website content management systems for external websites. These are great for storing information but do not have much in the way of interacting with the data.
SharePoint is great as a central file repository or a wiki for you. It's nice to create custom lists that order things in different ways or filter them for different users. It does not handle images easily so if you deal with a lot of images or screenshots it will be difficult to use. Custom development is hard. If you want to add custom web parts to it, then you will need to spend extra time in development. The development is not an easy process.
