Overall Satisfaction with MS SharePoint / SQL

We currently use MS Sharepoint/SQL across the enterprise with a number of SharePoint farms supporting different customers who have different needs. It allows a single place for all users to collaborate on work and projects. The ability to easily share information with other users with a familiar interface allows us to address communication issues.
  • Easy to share information with colleagues or partners within or outside of the organization.
  • Easy to learn quickly, people are used to the interface.
  • Everyone likes talking about themselves, SharePoint gives users a place to do that if they so wish.
  • Setting up an external facing SharePoint site securely can be a challenge.
  • Permissions can be difficult for users to set up and maintain.
  • Setup can be intimidating as it can require many servers if you split all the roles out.
We evaluated Atlassian Confluence and compared it to our current SharePoint implementation. We felt that the two products were quite similar in the user experience but we chose to keep our SharePoint farms up and running. This was mainly due to the cost of switching and the fact that they are both similar in feel and use. Confluence did some cool things but not enough to tip the scales.
SharePoint can merge data from a number of different sources easily and the output can be whatever helps a team the most. Many different types of data can be combined for consumption by many different audiences. The SQL server does a good and reliable job of performing as a real-time warehouse/backend for SharePoint.
SharePoint does a good job at allowing members of different teams the ability to collaborate using disparate types of data. Access control exists down to the users level allowing end users to tightly control granular permissions on the content of their pages. It is easy to work together with other people towards a shared goal using the software.
SharePoint is a good fit in organizations where the users are vocal and enjoy sharing information in a social media-type style. It is easy to pick up and use for most people. SharePoint pages can be easily customized.
