Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We used Paychex across the entire organization as a way to mange both the human resource functions as well as the payroll functions of the organization. By the end we were using many of the more interesting parts such as onboarding, benefits, and employee reviews. Paychex was an excellent full service support system for the HR department and it made our lives much easier.

Pros and Cons

Solid payroll system with a long history of trust and accountability.
Integrates all the HRM functions needed into one system.
Easy to use self service for employees cutting down on extra work for HR and line managers.
Easy to access help system and to speak with a real person.

Some of the modules did not communicate well with each other but were improving.
Random setting changes happened with employees due to end dates that caused employees to not show up on payroll, had to manually check.
Benefits brokerage was low end when it comes to options.

Return on Investment

Reduced need from two HR employees to one.
Ability to better track and manage employee payroll and time and attendance.

Alternatives Considered

I have reviewed or used many other HRM and Payroll products. Paychex is a very solid program that overall does a very strong job. It is definitely competitive in the sense that it is constantly improving. With any large software system, there are glitches and issues that need to be resolved. Paychex had its fair share of those.

Support Rating

Overall, the support was amazing, quick to resolve issues and very personable. We had one dedicated rep that I could always reach out to and they would resolve our issues for the most part.
I went through several reps in three years as they tend to promote from within and since it is a fairly complicated system a few reps I had were not fully knowledgeable.
There were some issues that just never got resolved, especially with regard to payroll tax reporting in different states, issues with onboarding or benefit selection, mistakes on reporting. Sometimes it seemed like issues just got kicked around until they hoped that you forgot about them.

Usability

Very user friendly and had excellent features that were both admin and employee user friendly. The self reporting and self administration was perfect and saved us a lot of time in the HR department. Employees enjoyed it as well as they did not have to wait for HR to update their information but could do so immediately.

Overall, Paychex was well suited to help our company integrate completely online with all aspects of a full Human Resource department. We were able to integrate many of the HR functions into one software system which made it easy for employees, managers, and HR to manage the multifaceted areas of talent management and development.
