PRTG Network Monitor-Great for Network Administrators
Overall Satisfaction with PRTG Network Monitor
We use PRTG Network Monitor to monitor all our network devices, which includes switches, wireless access points, servers, Battery backups, and other critical devices. Using SNMP, we can monitor any important sensors we deemed critical. If any equipment should go offline, our department would get a push notification and email, so we can take a look right away.
Pros
- Setting up the system/server is easy. Web interface is easy to use.
- Lots of options to monitor specific sensors, rather than the whole device, so you don't get stuff you don't want.
- Works will all vendors. I am monitoring, servers and devices from Meraki, Cisco, and APC.
Cons
- The interface isn't fancy. However, they are pushing an updated one, which is better.
- I would like an easier way to turn off notifications during updates. Right now, I get bombarded with alerts if I do firmware updates.
- I would like a template set up for a group. If I want to use custom sensors, I need to add this one by one. I would like a way to add a custom sensor, and choose which devices I would like to monitor.
- I don't have any numbers, but I guarantee the yearly subscription cost works out in the long run. It probably saves us a number of work after hours.
- SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor (npm)
Setup for PRTG Network Monitor is much easier. SW npm requires two servers to run (One to run the product, and one for the SQL Database). PRTG Network Monitor only needs one server. From my experience SolarWinds requires a license per device, where PRTG Network Monitor is per sensor. Overall, PRTG Network Monitor is much more powerful and user friendly.
