Overall Satisfaction with Pure Storage FlashArray

Pure Storage is nothing short of fantastic, even in the event their storage is not an issue if you have an issue with VMware they will be there to support you and assist VMware in any way possible. Their support is second to none in my experience and incredibly valuable when required.
Pure Storage is used for our entire VMware environment which consists of ~100 virtual machines including many SQL Server workloads. It is used across the entire staff base running all critical business systems.

Traditional storage was poor performing and expensive to maintain support without ripping and replacing the entire infrastructure while also being difficult to manage and configure. Pure addressed all performance issues and the interface is so easy to use which essentially lowers the administrative burden on the IT infrastructure team.
  • Performance - this is exceptional and better than any other providers I have used, sub-millisecond performance is standard across our SAN.
  • Support - Pure support is great and has always been helpful and friendly. Upgrades are a seamless experience and their support fills you with the confidence that it will be done with no issues whatsoever. Response times for support is great.
  • Ease of use - The Pure GUI is very easy to use and the most simplest GUI on storage I have ever used by far, so simple in fact that once set you don't have to spend much time working in it until you need to make a change to a volume or hosts.
  • Pure Storage is simple to use, I find it really hard to find anything that really needs to be suggested improvement wise. Maybe some more documentation or design templates for stretched cluster might be useful.
  • Previously we had core business systems that required dedicated physical hardware due to slow spinning disk storage and very poor performance when virtualised. This was a considerable cost not only in the hardware itself but licensing and having to use other software for backups etc which increased admin overhead. Moving to a Pure array we were able to virtualise the systems with the same level of performance as when they were on physical servers saving us a considerable amount of time and money.
Infrastructure administrators are heavily relied upon for a huge array of tasks, by simpllifying the storage administration it has freed up some additional time meaning they can focus on deliverying technology that helps drive business objectives.
Do a proof of concept before your existing storage comes out of maintenance, you will be amazed at how well it performs and is easy to manage. Talk to current users of the storage and see how happy they are with the product. Oh and start liking the colour orange as you will want to promote the storage once you try it!
I have used EMC, Dell Compellent and Nimble arrays in the enterprise space. Pure is the most simple to deploy, use and manage by far and the performance is fantastic.
  • Traditionally our core business systems required physical disks as the IO latency on these servers was too high for normal SAN capabilities. As an example running a process on a physical server would take 21 seconds to do but via an auto-tiering SAN that same process would take 8 minutes and 32 seconds. Virtualising the server and running the process using Pure Storage the process took 21 seconds.
Performance, low admin overhead, high IO requirement on SAN are all scenarios that fit well. Ease of use to maintain and administer the storage is a very big plus especially when your administrators are struggling with workloads.

Bulk storage of static files such as file servers are not the best use case for this type of SAN
