Overall Satisfaction with Read&Write
Read&Write is available across all college devices (both students and staff), around 5000 overall. The software is used as assistive technology to help to address challenges that students may face when accessing programmes (e.g., Word, Chrome) and completing coursework. My department uses Read&Write extensively to develop study skills for students with Additional Support Needs.
Pros
- Embeds options within other programmes as a toolbar
- Provides detailed guidance for using different aspects of the programme
- Allows customisation for individuals
Cons
- Some graphics in the toolbar are difficult to interpret
- There is a lack of clarity between what is available in different versions
- Frequent updates are hard to stay on top of
- Staff resource can be more targeted on students who need higher levels of support
- Demos and training can be provided virtually, which allows students to learn to use the product outside of working hours
- 30% of exams now use Read&Write rather than requiring individual readers and scribes
Having a consistent programme has been very helpful for students with cognitive challenges. We are now seeing students who are coming to college after having used Read&Write at school, and their confidence and ease of use has encouraged the use of Read&Write within their classes. Students are able to use Read&Write on college PCs and laptops as well as their own devices at home.
While the Microsoft 365 features are convenient, Read&Write has the advantage that it can be used consistently in both Office products and the Chrome web browser, which helps students as they don't have to learn different systems. Crucially, Read&Write can be used in exam conditions as it is approved by the SQA.
