Overall Satisfaction with Renaissance Accelerated Reader

Accelerated Reader is being used county-wide in grades K-8. Accelerated Reader gives us a powerful tool to assess students' levels in reading using STAR tests, tests to check students' comprehension, and reports to track progress. Accelerated Reader helps motivate students to read every day and achieve their individual reading goals.

Pros

  • Accelerated Reader does a good job of making the use of STAR results to easily set AR goals for students.
  • AR goals are easy to see and keep track of each student's progress towards their goals.

Cons

  • AR could use a face lift for viewing reports by making the font easier to read.
  • I think AR could increase their student engagement by having a screen that recognized students for "streaks" of passing tests, making 100% on tests, etc.
  • Accelerated Reader, when used correctly, can increase student growth and achievement on end of year tests.
  • Accelerated Reader encourages students to choose book they are interested in to increase their reading levels which helps them in every subject.
Renaissance has very helpful videos and articles in their help section. They also have an online community that you can join for free that encourages discussions on their products and ways to use them in different settings. They also offer many free webinars. One-on-one support usually comes from an instructional facilitator in our county.

Yes

Accelerated Reader is a great program for most schools through 8th grade. Though elementary students are more excited about reading and the program, middle school students also can find enjoyment in it as well. I find that I have to motivate my 8th graders more, but we have had success as a team in getting 100% percent of our students to achieve their AR goals in nine weeks.
