Overall Satisfaction with SAP HANA
Based on my exposure and experience with SAP HANA since 2016, would like to share the following personal perspective 1) Most of the organization have spent substantial budgets in rolling out an ERP solution and there after maintaining it 2)Many a time the solution implemented are heavily customized 3) Organizations are really scared to implement a change, especially if it forms the backbone of their operations and is spread across multiple user groups, geographies and business With the above points in mind, the best use cases I have seen are (as in sequence) propelling 1) Hardware refresh 2) If the implementation is more than 4-5 years old and the business operations have significantly grown since implementation. This would require a reimplementation 3) If the business is on expansion mode (across geos and products/services etc) and need an interconnected /(near)real time operational reporting 4)Demergers 5)wanting to kickstart a cloud journey for organization 6) Superb sales pitch complemented by an underutilized budget and an overzealous IT team (with hidden agenda of increasing their longevity in the organization
Pros
- In-memory processing changes the name of the game for DB performance while enabling the storage
- Data storage is enhanced due to better compression
- Response time to complex queries are phenomenally better
- Proactive monitoring enabled
- Supports cloud platform integrations
Cons
- Requires higher processing power, otherwise it won't fly. How ever computing costs are lower. Incase you are migrating to cloud please do not select the highest config available in that series . Upgrading it later against a reserved instance can cost you dearly with a series change
- Lack of clarity on licensing is one major challenge
- Unless S/4 with additional features are enabled mere migration HANA DB is not a rewarding journey. Power is in S/4
- Better user satisfaction due system performance
- Since it is only DB level change, user community are not impacted . ie minimal change
- Scales up reporting capability
- Improves the maintenance approach of applications compared to the previous DBs
1) Report querying time have been saved a minimum by 25-30%
2) Large volumes of data sets available and responses time for DB queries are fractions of earlier stage
3) Makes a stable foundation for furthering the analytical and planning capabilities - with SAC getting enabled will give a great advantage
4) Move to HANA is inevitable. However, personally i feel, the deadline will get extended to 2030 with any additional cost as against 2027 set today. This gives you a better prep opportunity, with minimal change impacts. ( Like a welcome breather from an upfront significant outflow)

1) Higher volumes of data from multiple sources as well as tech stacks integrated the tech landscape
2) Available data is used extensively using the cloud capabilities
3) Provides confidence to integrate with varied technological interfaces
4) To me (from a consulting mind) "Data is the pulse of the business process". Quality of it and usage drives an effortless scaling.

The improved Demand forecasting calculations, MRP runs, Financial report generations, costing runs have all impacted positively due to the HANA DB. Enablement of Material ledger by default brings in certain discipline.
Interestingly Workday financials is getting paired with Workday HCM.. Do not find it a comforting approach if one has to have tight integration with logistics operations
