Overall Satisfaction with SAP Master Data Governance

We are currently upgrading the older release of SAP Master Data Management (MDM) to SAP Master Data Governance (MDG) as we upgrade the rest of our ERP software to SAP S/4HANA that requires an upgrade of MDM to MDG.

Pros

  • Master data version control
  • Master data de-duplication
  • Proactive prevention of duplication of master data
  • Scrubbing of old imported master data from other systems
  • Managing availability of clean master data to other modules of SAP and other non-SAP systems

Cons

  • SAP can benefit by adding more out-of-the-box, included interfaces to non-SAP systems that often exchange data with SAP
  • More MDG training especially delta training for prior users of MDM would help
  • The most positive ROI that SAP Master Data Governance has provided is clean quality data improvements that used to cost more to clean with other master data tools and manual master data cleanup.
  • A short-live negative impact was the cost of building a team of consultants and employees dedicated to mainly the SAP Master Data Governance
SAP Master Data Governance was the best choice for us since 50% of our business enterprise software consists of different SAP ERP software modules and SAP Master Data Governance integrates and manages data the best if from predominantly SAP ecosystems like ours.
Support from SAP as the software vendor that provided the software and support was the best choice, but like any support teams, there is occasionally some delays in getting an expert to resolve a support issue in the time expected by us.
SAP Master Data Governance is mostly straight-forward for users of other SAP ERP software, but compared to competitors' software, SAP Master Data Governance appears to be harder to use and require more steps to accomplish MDG tasks. However, the trade-off is worth it because SAP Master Data Governance is more thorough than other non-SAP data governance solutions and offers more in-built integrations to other SAP ERP software.

SAP Master Data Governance is great for companies like ours that has extensive usage of various SAP ERP modules. SAP Master Data Governance may not be the best fit for companies that have other ERP providers like Oracle, Infor, MS Dynamics and other ERP software.
