Overall Satisfaction with Scale Computing Platform

We use Scale Computing Platform as our production hypervisor platform to manage 20-40 VMs. We migrated to Scale Computing Platform when we upgraded our data center and decided not to continue with VMWare. Scale Computing Platform offered a simpler, faster, cheaper and compared to our previous environment a more robust solution while providing us a U.S. based single-plane of support (server hardware, hypervisor & Acronis backup solution).

Pros

  • We saw a significant improvement VM performance
  • The ease & simplicity of management compared to VMware for a small/medium enterprise is much better.
  • The support experience has been much better.

Cons

  • Display the IP address of the node on which the VM is running on the Devices (gear icon) tab. This would allow me to manage my Microsoft license easier.
  • During the on-boarding I missed the step to install the Scale Computing Platform tools, and we didn't notice this until I had issues with backups. It would be helpful if some kind of alert notification would display on a VM card if the tools were not installed.
  • Add a new health or diagnostics tab that would display alerts, diagnostic tools, performance concerns or pattern anomalies.
  • Some kind of email/alert when a disk reaches near capacity
They are very knowledgeable about their own products and hardware addressing my concerns or issues very quickly and on the first contact. Calls concerning VMware migrations and Acronis backup took a little more time for more complicated issues, but the Scale Computing Platform techs were diligent to stay on top of issues until they were resolved. Most of my issues have been with the initial setup/migration.
  • Productivity in some of our applications is easily 80% faster.
  • Windows updates are typically 20-40% faster.
  • Some of our application updates are up to 80% faster.
  • Server reboot times are 40-50% faster.
VM management is easier and faster. Snapshot management is easier and faster. User accounts are simpler to manage (though less granular). Basic alerts are easier to setup, though VMWare has a more granular approach. Updates to the Scale Computing Platform itself is so much easier than upgrading vCenter. Ultimately, I chose to migrate to Scale Computing Platform for easier management of our VMs, performance and faster & easier support.

I believe Scale Computing Platform shines in the small enterprise environment and it would work well in a medium/edge environment enterprise environment. Based on my experience with VMWare, I believe Scale Computing Platform's solution would struggle to meet the needs of a larger enterprise that relies on more robust, industry standardized system integrations for automation and management. The Acronis backup solution is robust, but Veeam is the industry standard for a reason.
