Overall Satisfaction with Slack

We use slack as the main internal communication tool. So every employee is in it. We have different channels for departments like tech or sales. The predominant use case is direct 1 to1 messages between employees.
  • Filesharing like dropping screenshots goes very fast
  • It is very intuitive and easy to use
  • General channels (e.g. for sales) keep everyone in the team up-to-date
  • It distracts people too much from work, especially the notifications that cannot be turned off. So you have this red thing telling you there is a new message which makes it very hard to continue working and be not looking at it right away.
  • Features like the integration of GIPHY are fun but also easily distract people with the blinking animations.
  • Nothing to do with slack but more of a genreal problem with group chat is that everybody feels like he needs to add something to a discussion even if it is not really helpful. For example, sales people talking in a tech channel.
  • I am actually not sure. It fosters communicaiton on one hand but it also is a big distraction.
  • IRC
Slack is kind of like the old IRC chats, just with a much more modern and easier to use UI.
It's good for startup teams as it centralizes communication in one tool and keeps everyone on board.
