Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor

We use the SaaS SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor platform to monitor our networks and server applications. Running modules to manage different environments. Adjust the need of adding and removing custom parameters or other changes that are needed. Troubleshooting issues or scenarios to achieve desired results. Observing performances of servers we manage.

Pros

  • Changed licensing system from by service purchases
  • Good for static or simple environments
  • Pretty good PowerShell module
  • Decent monitoring interface

Cons

  • Customer service and sales reps experiences
  • Expensive compared to other options
  • The initial setup process took a while and much effort
  • Requires a pretty large footprint and not reliable
  • Difficult to add and remove, custom monitors, dashboards, and adjusting thresholds
  • Expensive compared to others in the industry.
  • Not user friendly with set up or other adjustments.
  • Hounding of sales reps is also another negative.
  • Lack of quality of customer service lowers the ROI as well.
Overall I give the SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor platform a three. For reasons I mentioned earlier. While they have a good monitoring interface, Powershell module and have improved their licensing structure, they are better suited in my option for companies that have a static or less complex environment monitoring need.
Compared to these two options; LogicMonitor and BMC Truesight that i have also used, I will give my option of how I think SolarWinds Server stacks up against them both. SolarWinds vs LogicMonitor, hands down I think LogicMonitor comes out on top. With its reliability, functions and cost, the ROI is much better. BMC Truesight vs SolarWinds, I feel like SolarWinds is much better than BMC Truesight or BMC Patrol. Overall the best choice for me would be LogicMonitor.

No

Are you happy with SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor's feature set?

No

Did SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor live up to sales and marketing promises?

No

Did implementation of SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor go as expected?

No

Would you buy SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor again?

No

There are more budget friendly options that are also more reliable. It also has a massive footprint and initial setup is not user friendly. On top of that the difficultly to remove or add custom monitors, adjust thresholds, dashboards or other adjustments are the reasons why I rate the platform low.
