Overall Satisfaction with SolarWinds Virtualization Manager

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it in our IT department for quick access dashboards that show the various health statuses and information of our VMs.

Pros and Cons

Pros

Shows obvious graphical status of what's going on right now
Emailed alerts
Fantastic drilldown
Seamless incorporation into the Orion framework
Great community

Cons

Less system overhead
Less redundancy with other Orion packages
Create a singular VM hierarchy that removes the legacy Orion server mishmash

Return on Investment

Less down time
Faster return to functional status
Better warnings as to when hardware should be upgraded (no surprises)

Alternatives Considered

We are fairly heavily invested in other SolarWinds packages already so why add another software package when I can plug a module into a proven framework I'm already running.

Other Software Used

SolarWinds Network Performance Monitor, SolarWinds Netflow Traffic Analyzer, SolarWinds Server & Application Monitor, SolarWinds Network Configuration Manager

Although there is quite a bit of carryover between what I was already getting I think with my SAM module, overall it's still a very valuable package even for small installs. Simple dashboards and alerts can help prevent catastrophic down time if used properly.
