Overall Satisfaction with Ubiquiti WLAN

We deployed the AP-EDU models in our two middle schools - these are the combo speaker/AP units (which they have discontinued support for - less than three years old). We also have rolled out the AP-PRO models in most of the rest of our 18 buildings. We needed to add AP's (we have close to 2500 AP's deployed District wide) to accommodate the increase in technology in our schools.
  • Controller is free
  • Radio settings are incredible (and should be available on any AP)
  • POE
  • Troubleshooting can be difficult - not enough details in logs
  • They add/drop features will little notice
  • They aren't really Enterprise ready
  • Controller was free
  • Cost
  • Feature set
  • Initial ROI was positive - but now we need to replace them
  • We were able to deploy rapidly - configuration is easy if not consistent
  • Upgrades are easy to apply when they don't take the radios offline - which happens more often then not
No contest - Fortinet is Enterprise ready and a good replacement. More expensive then Ubiquiti, but in the areas we've tested them, the performance (and ease of installation and configuration) makes it worth the price.

Do you think Ubiquiti WLAN delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Ubiquiti WLAN's feature set?

No

Did Ubiquiti WLAN live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Ubiquiti WLAN go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Ubiquiti WLAN again?

No

You can't beat the feature set for the price. They do deliver a lot of bang for the buck. But, if you have a large, enterprise environment, we've discovered that they really can't handle the load. If you need coverage for a small area, and aren't concerned with roaming, or devices attaching to radios four rooms down, then they may work for you. We've found that even tweaking the settings, the performance is very inconsistent.
