Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We don't do anything super fancy with the system, but we do a lot of VM backups of our VMware environment. We also do backups to our S3 bucket we have in the Seagate Lyve Cloud. These backups are seamless, and we have no issues with any of the configurations we have run. While we have had some minor issues, support has been great in helping us figure things out quickly, getting us back on track.
Pros
- Scheduled Backups
- Backups to cloud
- Ease of restoration
- Restoration options
- Backup options
Cons
- The interface is not all that intuitive
- Possibly additional options for backup locations
- Virtualized workloads
- Enterprise applications such as Oracle or SAP HANA
- In addition to back up, we also replicate some of these workloads
- In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
- Application-centric recovery using Veeam Explorers (for Exchange, SQL, Sharepoint, etc)
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
- “Instant” recovery or portability between platforms (physical > virtual > cloud-hosted)
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
We are backing up approximately 30 virtual workloads to a local storage, and replicating the most important data with additional jobs to the S3 cloud. It is about the same. Our environment does not have a need to change much, and we are conscious of our data storage capacity, so that we do not overuse it.
- Successful backup strategy protecting our core data assets
- Licensing has been better than previous platform
- Ease of setup and use
We were previously using a cloud based solution that was also agent based, through Dell Apex solution. Their service worked fairly well, but being completely cloud based, it had serious faults we did not like. Additionally, we were up for renewal, and the renewal price was absurdly high. We did not want to continue to pay more for less, as we felt the cost increase did not keep up with the service we were getting.
We have, but only to a limited extent. We are an old school diesel truck and trailer repair business with locations across upper midwest. The company still has not fully embraced cloud, and will not go all in on it anytime soon. That being said, we in IT do recognize that having backups spread across multiple locations, including the cloud, are an advantage. We have lots more work to be done to get better at utilizing this feature.
We are not currently leveraging this capability, as we are only using it for backing up our VM infrastructure. Additionally, our current backup server is not very high end. We do plan on moving the backup system to a more robust and higher end set of hardware, including a SAN. At that point we may revisit adding this to our solution.
