Cost effective solution for my needs
Overall Satisfaction with Veeam Data Platform
We use Veeam to backup critical servers to offsite cloud storage, including our domain controllers, DNS, DHCP, Active Directory, payroll application, and network management servers. The payroll application servers are backed up daily with a couple of others that have frequent changes, and the others are backed up weekly. We keep backups going back 6 months.
Pros
- Low maintenance after the initial configuration
- Cost effective for the capabilities
- Easier and cheaper than investing in new local backups
Cons
- Their documentation is unclear and outdated in places
- Support could respond faster
- Support has responded with unrelated canned responses to my tickets
- Virtualized workloads
- Endpoints and physical servers running Windows & Linux
- In addition to back up, we also snapshot some of these workloads
- Cloud-hosted VMs within AWS or Azure
- License portability as your environment needs change
- Automating test restores to validate recoverability
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
- Immutable storage to protect against ransomware
We have 5 physical servers running 2-3 VM's each, with various applications on each VM depending on resource requirements. I use Veeam to backup each VM separately, and then also backup each Host.
- While Veeam is a recurring cost, it pays for itself when considering the cost of storage refreshes every 5 years.
- Configuration takes much less time than spinning up a dedicated appliance.
- It's nice to have additional support available rather than tackling issues solo.
I discovered that the organization currently had zero backups of critical systems, so I was looking for a solution that I could implement quickly and affordably without having to go through the rigorous procurement process that a large local storage project would require. Since implementing Veeam there's a lot less FUD throughout my department when we come in on a Monday morning and everything is still running smoothly.
We backup directly to Google Cloud Storage and it has been both convenient and cost effective, requiring minimal maintenance after the initial setup. We have not had to utilize the disaster recovery features, or really even retrieve anything for production, but the peace of mind knowing that we are protected from not only data loss but also natural disasters is significant.
We do not currently utilize this feature.
For the limited scale and scope of our backup needs I immediately knew Veeam by reputation so didn't need to seriously consider alternatives more than some casual research. The more I learned about Veeam, the more confident I was that it would meet our needs and the pricing was attractive.
