Overall Satisfaction with VMware ESXi

VMware ESXi has been in use in my organization for a number of years. We are a healthcare organization and not for profit. We have 9 ESXi servers across 3 sites. ESXi allows my organization to run the servers and applications needed to be successful in providing top-notch healthcare to our patients.

Pros

  • High availability.
  • Easy migration.

Cons

  • Some of the more advanced features might take additional training.
  • Free version limitations.
  • The key is spinning up the virtual servers you need without shopping for additional physical hardware.
  • The up-time achieved with HA has enabled us to keep running during certain outages, keeping the business going at all times.
I have also used Hyper-v by Microsoft on and off over the last 5 years. VMware has better CPU capabilities than Hyper-v. This translates to better performance. VMware also has a purpose-built storage file system. They've improved it over the years as well. They also allow for virtual sans which spreads your storage around. VMware's ESXi has an easier to use interface. The terminology makes sense. I understand this is a preference.
VMware support has never failed me. I've had to call a few times over the years. Emergency support comes fast. There are vmware support engineers spread out across the country. Sometimes I've gotten folks who are in another country but I know what they're saying. They are competent. They are all very knowledgeable and get you up and running again quickly.

In my opinion, VMware ESXi is the best software for running virtual machines out of other hypervisors that I have tried. It works great for a good amount of servers. If you're hosting only a handful of servers, you may be pressed to find a free or low budget solution. If you're running a medium-sized business, up through a large enterprise, this is the technology you want.
