Likelihood to Recommend

Adobe PhotoShop

Scenarios where we love using PhotoShop:
  • Editing a background
  • Editing someone or something out of a background
  • Removing or adding items to a photo
  • Creating visual effects on or with a photo (making a photo look old or an old photo to look new)
  • Creating print-ready, high-res high-end graphics
  • Creating gradients
  • Creating multi-layer effects on photos
Scenarios where you can use PhotoShop, but other items in Adobe line can facilitate better:
  • Creating illustrations, vectors, or iconic shapes: Adobe Illustrator is better for this
  • Creating multi-page brochures or books: Adobe InDesign is better for this
  • Creating batch images in different renders and sizes for multi-platform media: Adobe Spark is good for this.
This is NOT an easy product to work with. You must have experience and training in order to produce the desired effects (Not for beginners).

Affinity

I first started to use Affinity related tools with Serif in 2004. When these tools became available, I started using them, and much to my surprise of the people that use Affinityit is now universally accepted. More people will use this in the future due to the total cost and value it brings.

Pros

Adobe PhotoShop

  • Highly Functional & Extremely Versatile — Users can accomplish a LOT with Photoshop, including photo restoration, graphic design, vector-based art creation (such as logo design), digital painting... even animation!
  • Industry Standard — Adobe Photoshop is one of the industry-leading software for graphic editing.
  • Responsive and Reliable — Photoshop runs extremely smooth. I rarely ever run into any issues or glitches due to software malfunction. It does what it does, and it does it well.

Affinity

  • Almost all of Adobe Photoshop's features for a fraction of the cost. It was an easy decision for our organization.
  • The interface and most of the features are an almost mirror image of Photoshop. Flat fees instead of high yearly fees are much more desirable for our small team.
  • They have a great support forum for the little one-offs that aren't quite like the Photoshop app, or don't have the same exact name as Photoshop. The forum really helps when this happens. The YouTube support from the company and other users has been very helpful as well.
  • I use Sketch as my primary vector design tool. Affinity allows me to take a .ai, .eps, or other proprietary format and convert it to .svg for use/manipulation with Sketch and back. I can't say enough for this feature. It has helped me stay less pigeon-holed into Adobe products, which have lacked innovation for a long time in my opinion.

Cons

Adobe PhotoShop

  • I think PS could be a little more intuitive. Since there is so much you can do with it, it's hard to know what every function does without in-depth changes.
  • Like most Adobe products, PS is always updating which can make it hard to keep up year after year.

Affinity

  • I have found some of the tools to be particular. I have to click them in a certain order for it to work.
  • Ability to alter or move the icons displayed.
  • Auto-save as you work.

We have 11 people using the program almost every day and when needed, we pull in other free lancers to continue the work flow. We have our Adobe subscription set to auto-renew every month and we're not getting rid of that anytime soon!

Usability

Adobe PhotoShop

Adobe PhotoShop 8.9

I've used it for a long time and would consider myself a Pro user at this point. I know where everything I need is, have custom actions set up to make common actions faster, and have my workflows automated so much that everything is easy. Occasionally, a new version of Photoshop will change a common usability feature which will slow things down for a short time before I'm able to adjust, but generally I really like my setup. However, if you're new to Photoshop, it is likely going to take you a while to figure out how you can best use the features.

For a regular user of Photoshop, Affinity is a very easy transition. It has all the same features and once you adapt to it, and it provides a quick return on investment.

Reliability and Availability

Adobe Photoshop is very reliable, but is never 100%. There have been times when Adobe Photoshop has had trouble opening, but nothing a little computer restart couldn't fix. I use Adobe Photoshop on a Mac for both work and at home on a daily basis, and I would be lost without it.

Speed can be an issue when you are dealing with large files for large format printing or billboards. When working on web images, speed is not an issue.

The times I've had issues, support staff were friendly. The live chat on Adobe's site has been helpful with some licensing issues I've had. But over the years, I have had some issues with product functionality that it seemed like the company could care less about. Not sure if it's fair to rate them based on experiences that happened a few years ago, but I guess it's all part of the total experience I've had with Adobe.

I have not had much opportunity to go directly to support, but the training modules that are employed by the company are fantastic. I also find that if I need to understand something, there is always another user ready and willing to share their secrets. As this tool becomes more accepted local communities will also start to organize

Alternatives Considered

Adobe PhotoShop

Other image editors I've had experience with are Pixlr, Gimp and Windows Paint. While I personally liked Pixlr the most out of those 3, none of them hold a candle to Photoshop. I've spent more time in Photoshop than the others, so naturally, I'm more familiar with it. It takes a little bit of practice and time to get comfortable in it but once you know your way around, it is the most efficient and effective image editor available on the market. Learning keyboard shortcuts increases efficiency ten fold.

Return on Investment

Adobe PhotoShop

  • Photoshop really produces professional results that make images appear more professional in nature
  • With its large compatibility with multiple image formats, Photoshop can help save time by combining editing features for different types of images.
  • Although slight more expensive than other products, It has capabilities that many marketing and design firms need.

Affinity

  • It has reduced our cost per seat as compared to Adobe's solution, but for our small team, it's a great savings.
  • Some of our most experienced designers griped a bit at first, but came around fairly quickly. Well worth the cost savings we are still benefiting from.
  • Affinity has allowed us to save cost, and still produce solid designs with a negligible difference to our clients or employees for that matter. Our clients absolutely did not notice, while the savings really helped our bottom line.
