Dropbox Business

Most useful for accessing documents on the go, or to back up files when switching to a new computer or other devices. The business subscription is great for sharing documents with co-workers, storing commonly used files (such as logos and templates), and for collaboration. Doesn't have all the features of other project management software, but for document sharing, it has everything I need. The recent updates to the platform are helpful in providing quick access to files. Also, I really like that you can link your personal and business accounts.

Dropbox is very expensive and its price is not as competitive as it was. We are looking for an alternative that will enable as to subscribe more users at a more affordable cost. Also, we did not like Dropbox customer service, and felt that they should have found a way to compensate us for some of the damage they were responsible for when restoring our data.

Dropbox is very easy and fun to use. It is very self evident and from a graphical user interface it is very intuitive. There is really nothing else to say about it.

At least once a week the app crashes on my computer and causes files to stop syncing. It is an easy fix to re-open the app, however I have to notice the app stopped working to realize it needs to be reopened.

Syncing to the cloud is almost instantaneous. Users on the same network can see my changes within seconds on their computer.

One of our employees accidentally deleted large portion of our database. I've reached out for help as the admin site did not manage to restore the content (it requested I contact support). It took Dropbox about 2 month to handle the problem, and eventually we got a very huge mess. Some of the files were never restored, and we lost money and reputation. Dropbox, on their part, did not do but the bare minimum to help us with this, nor they took responsibility for their inability to supply us with the backup and restore features they were committed to.

The implementation was actually very simple. Again, as stated previously, the most intriguing part of the entire exercise was the implementation of the directory structure for each account. Once you design and implement it for one, it becomes quite simple to replicate for each account you implement thereafter. You just really need to take time to ensure you implement the first perfectly and those that follow on will be likewise work efficiently and easily.

Alternatives Considered

ADrive has been very easy to use, and it's fast

The three mentioned above come to mind most readily, but there were others we compared against Dropbox. Dropbox may not have been the cheapest, or had the most rich feature/functionality set, but it was the most straightforward and simple to understand. It was the LEAST complex. And being the least complex we felt it would present the least problems. Sure enough we are aware of customers, friends and even team members that have tried the services mentioned above and have found them to be a bit difficult to use at times and too complex for their own good, among other things. So we are happy to go with the more simple, straight forward solution.

The only limit to scaling Dropbox is pricing. After a certain point, using traditional data storage would be more cost effective than per user pricing.

Return on Investment

  • None, but it has been a good reference for associates to download files remotely

  • Faster project completion times
  • Less money spent shipping hard drives
  • The ability to add or remove the number of user seats monthly allows us to add only the seats that we need and work flexibly
