Amazon QuickSight

Amazon QuickSight is good when you want to interrogate data quickly and the data is in the AWS eco-system. QuickSight is not a great option if you want pixel-perfect visualizations with a lot of functionality. Overall, it's a solid solution but needs to mature a lot if it wants to become an enterprise solution.

Pros

Amazon QuickSight

  • Amazon QuickSight is a really easy program to learn how to use.
  • Amazon QuickSight allows our team to customize the data using the various data sets, which makes the available reports incredibly powerful to our organization.
  • Our organization has the ability continually adjust our reports and build new reports as business needs change.
  • Even though our organization has different reports built for different departments, each department can still access and understand reports from across the company.

  • Easy to use - guides user on what to search for. Indexes not just field names, but dimension members.
  • Strong professional services team supporting the implementation. This helped a lot during ramp up and now our internal team is able to run most new use cases independently.
  • Robust modeling options solve for both simple and complex data models.

Cons

Amazon QuickSight

  • You can not use it as a primary reporting tool as many of the features are missing.
  • For complex reports for business, users need to get help from an IT person.
  • Business users time will waste in developing reports, it should have a version where we can promote the report from one environment to other.
  • Sharing report with the user who is not added in IAM is complex.

ThoughtSpot

  • ThoughtSpot can do a better job of providing prescriptive analytics.
  • Live connection for other databases is a much needed feature.
  • Pinboard canvas should allow for custom size rather than sticking to 5 pre-defined sizes.
  • More features needed in pinboard level filters.

We have had success with the initial use cases and there are more use cases that can receive return on investment. I don't give it a 10 because other products like Tableau are building functionality that may start to compete in the coming years.

User experience has been well designed. It doesn't take very long to get the system up and running for initial use - the support offered by ThoughtSpot is very responsive because of the focus of the company to make their users/customers successful.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon QuickSight

QuickSight is best suited to augment your other BI solutions, not as a primary tool. It still very immature when you compare it to products like Tableau, Qlik, Microsoft Power BI and others. However, it is very easy to get connected to data sources and a good way to interrogate data if the data is in the AWS system or database

ThoughtSpot is just as good at creating the initial graphic for the end user, it might even be better because the user really does not need much technical knowledge in order to create a basic graphic. Currently, ThoughtSpot cannot yet compete with the other tools when it comes to designing a fully interactive dashboard or with customization of graphics.

ThoughtSpot

  • ThoughtSpot will help our analytics team analyze a large quantity of data.
  • This will allow us to find more services to provide to our customers.
  • ThoughtSpot will allow us to find evidence of fraud by searching our database for unusual patterns of financial use and notifying our customers when we find anything unusual. This can save both us and our customers money.
  • ThoughtSpot allows our non-database users to get up to speed quickly on doing searches and accessing the data, which will save us money on training and allow more users to access the database.
