ThoughtSpot is well suited for ad-hoc data searches, to derive real-time metrics, to create personalized pinboards, to explore data that you haven't thought in the past exists.ThoughtSpot is not the right tool if you are used to canned reporting, i.e. BOXI or Tableau.

Pros

  • ThoughtSpot is very intuitive for the end user. No particular technical skills are required to start using the tool, just you need to know your data in order to search for meaningful statistical results.
  • With ThoughtSpot you are getting real-time data, which is particularly helpful when you need to make timely decisions for resolving data exceptions/issues.
  • ThoughtSpot has really cool features that help you actually get more proficient to use the tool full capacity, i.e. replay feature which shows steps by steps how to construct your question, especially helpful for more complex searches; your data can be transformed into a chart and even presentation slides; the tool is intuitive enough to learn your search pattern and even to present suggestion scenarios related to your historical searches; and so much more!

Cons

  • Historical data searches are important for the operational business areas, as it's common to export and save results for the decision making process. In this regard, maybe adding historical search repository for reference purposes, or historical replays.

We have had success with the initial use cases and there are more use cases that can receive return on investment. I don't give it a 10 because other products like Tableau are building functionality that may start to compete in the coming years.

Our business data is very complex and would require more effort to have the underlying data set up properly in order the search to be meaningful. It would require change of culture to adopt the new analytical search in the day-to-day functions, as existing reports still seem to be the preferred choice.

Alternatives Considered

ThoughtSpot is just as good at creating the initial graphic for the end user, it might even be better because the user really does not need much technical knowledge in order to create a basic graphic. Currently, ThoughtSpot cannot yet compete with the other tools when it comes to designing a fully interactive dashboard or with customization of graphics.

ThoughtSpot has a fairly simple access control system. Access to data can be controlled by filtering access by roles assigned to each user. Access control can be applied to both data as well as actions. Data sharing and reports sharing are also pretty straightforward - you can create distribution groups for scheduling automated reports

Data Integration

One of the better features offered by ThoughtSpot is the ability to seamlessly import and curate data from almost any source without any compatibility issues. Compared to other tools, ThoughtSpot does a considerably better job at this. ThoughtSpot also allows for data import from multiple sources within the same report/dashboard - this feature was extensively used by my team

Return on Investment

  • ThoughtSpot has changed our path within the data services department which allows us to focus on larger initiatives rather than your everyday reporting request.
