Chose Analytic Solver
We believe in building the models in Excel. A limitation with Excel is that Excel Solver can not take more than 200 decision variables with multiple constraints. It is cheap in terms of license and maintenance fees against other softwares which are available in the market.

User Testimonials
Analytic SolverIBM Cognos AnalyticsIBM InfoSphere Information Server
Likelihood to Recommend
1. It is good tool for a mathematical model which is a single period and deterministic model 2. It is good for the users who are comfortable in handling the Excel Solver and needs to upgrade the Excel Solver for more than 200 variables 3. It works well for the multiple objective problems. 4. Difficult to manage the big model as 100 constraints and 2000 variables can limit the use of the tool's efficiency. 5. Its limitation is that a model designer can not make a big and complex model.

IBM Cognos Analytics has great scheduling capabilities. A single report can be parameterized (e.g., “Store Manager ID”) and burst to thousands of recipients with their slice of data.IBM Cognos Analytics is a good fit for highly complex, multi-level calculations which can be handled by Report Studio. For example Monthly balance sheet that requires multi step calculation

Pros
  • Easy to use and learn.
  • Strong optimization platform for business and supply chain problems which can be modeled in Excel
  • It can handle multiple objectives and more than 8000 decision variables in a problem.
  • Lots of tutorial and examples are available to solve the problem

  • Data Visualization: Plenty of options exist for multiple use cases, and dashboards are easy to implement and customize.
  • Integration with IBM Watson: makes it easy to use Watson AI features (NLP etc.) on your data.
  • Its advanced analytics functionalities with powerful pattern detection/prediction models.

  • It is very strong to make transformations/data derivations
  • It is very easy to connect to various external data sources. It has an interface (stages) for each connection that simplifies the task
  • It is a stable platform. And that parallelism helps make it fast for loading, if the process is well designed

Cons
  • On the few occasions when I have used it to deal with problems of optimization of relatively large parameters (with a large number of restrictions and decision variables), the program has been slower, not substantially but slower, than programs such as the WinQsb, even when the latter runs on 32-bit machines and not 64. That has caught my attention, even though it is not a real problem for the uses I give to the program.
  • Given my partial function as a university professor, it has been much more effective and practical to use other software, due to the limited options that the educational license associated with the software has.

  • Lack of a strong web development environment.
  • Metadata propagation in Jobs is somewhat complex.
  • The possibility to develop jobs in Parallel and/or Server Engines is confusing.

It took my BI team one year to become productive at developing useful content on the IBM Cognos platform. After this year, the reports being developed for a client were stale and no longer relative to the ever changing needs of the business client. Given the same opportunity, I would select a platform that allows the team to quickly produce BI content. Fail fast and recover quickly!

Usability

We have a strong user base (3500 users) that are highly utilizing this tool. Basic users are able to consume content within the applied security model. We have a set of advanced users that really push the limits of Cognos with Report and Query Studio. These users have created a lot of personal content and stored it in 'My Reports'. Users enjoy this flexibility.

Reliability and Availability

Reports can typically be viewed through any browser that can access the server, so the availability is ultimately up to what the company utilizing it is comfortable with allowing, though report development tends to be more picky about browsers and settings as mentioned above. It also has an optional iPad app and general mobile browsing support, but dashboards lack the mobile compatibility. What keeps it from getting a higher score is the desktop tools that are vital to the development process. The compatibility with only Windows when the server has a wide range of compatibility can be a real sore point for a company that outfits its employees exclusively with Mac or Linux machines. Of course, if they are planning on outsourcing the development anyways, it's a rather moot point

Overall no major complaints but it doesn't handle DMR (Dimensionally Modeled for Relational) very well. DMR modelling is a capability that IBM Cognos Framework Manager provides allowing you to specify dimensional information for relational metadata and allows for OLAP-style queries. However, the capability is not very efficient and, for example, if I'm using only 2 columns on a 20-column model, the software is not smart enough to exclude 18 columns and the query side gets progressively larger and larger until it's effectively unusable.

Why is their web application not working as fast as you think it should? They never know, and it is always a a bunch of shots in the dark to find out. Trying to download software from them is like trying to find a book at the library before computers were invented.

The online courses they offer are thorough and presented in such a way that someone who isn't already familiar with the general design methodologies used in this field will be capable of making a good design. The training environments are provided as a fully self contained virtual machine with everything needed already to create the environments. We've had some persisting issues with the environments becoming unavailable, but support has been responsive when these issues arise and straightening them out for us

The implementation was handled very well. The initial implementation exposed a lot of disagreement between our campuses and departments as to how we define data. This was not entirely unexpected, but I thought that we did a nice job as a team to work through some of these challenges.

Alternatives Considered
The use of this software does not necessarily follow that it is "globally better" than others. In the department we have used this and others with similar characteristics, given that, as previously indicated, all the software has advantages and weaknesses with respect to other software with similar characteristics. Obtaining better results lies in the user's ability to detect those "benefits and weaknesses" and maximize their usefulness within the specific field of work in which they operate. In our case, one of the reasons that led us to try and use it, was related to trying to "tie" more processes to the same environment, which in this case is the one associated with the Excel database, in such a way as to reduce the initial manipulation and accommodation that should be made to the data if they come from different sources such as MATLAB, or WinQsb. This facilitates the use of software for the type of user who does not necessarily have deep knowledge of linear algebra or operations research, for example.
On the contrary, the most analytical and knowledgeable user manifested in a high percentage, preferring to use MATLAB as a tool, claiming that they have a greater and easier access to the calculation functions, which even in specific cases, could be modified.

Scalability
No answers on this topic
The Cognos architecture is well suited for scalability. However, the architecture must be designed with scalability in mind from day one of the implementation. We recently upgraded from 10.1 to 10.2.1 and took the opportunity to revamp our architecture. It is now poised for future growth and scalability.

Return on Investment
  • - It has allowed finding ways to optimize (minimizing costs or times) the field processes involved in various projects.
  • It has even allowed, in specific cases where it was used for that purpose, to optimize the allocation of resources (people) to work in different jobs that present weekly variations of the activity that these people must perform.
  • It has allowed the sensitivity analysis of projects to changes in the decision variables related to them, which, and in very dynamic and changing environments, resulted in substantial decreases in money losses.

  • The platform can be pretty pricey.
  • Convoluted contracts and they fine you for any breach during audits.
  • Things are changed between releases without any warning and break.
  • It is second to none at being able to customize list and crosstab type reports.
  • You can easily set up a report to be emailed out every day and even have it export the report to a shared folder.
  • On-prem environments can be scaled up pretty much as much as you would like.

  • Improve data quality and reduce bad data impacts
