Anaplan

Anaplan is great for modeling processes that are ongoing, and remain relatively the same over time. In other words, if you don't have a solid grasp of your process, or you know there are significant changes that change the way you do things on a not infrequent basis, you may want to wait to build the model in Anaplan until things are more stable or you have a better understanding of the business requirements of what you are trying to build. Wholesale changes to an Anaplan model can be cumbersome and time consuming - though that is not unlike modeling on any other platform. It's also probably not worth your time to build a model in Anaplan if you're only going to use it once - in this case, if it's not too complicated, Excel is probably a better choice

SAP Analytics Cloud

One specific scenario where SAP Analytics Cloud works very well is in empowering the workforce. Everyone in the organization gains access to the information that they require to execute their office roles at the at the exact time they require it. Due to this, they become equipped and gain confidence and are able to make ample decisions all the time. The software enables them to look at the past data and have a look at the evolution of trends in order to draw on them for future planning. The other scenario where SAP Analytics Cloud is good is improving sales and marketing activities in our company. From its analysis, we are able to gain a true picture of the sales we have made and the number of new customers that we have tapped into our customer base. If the statistics appear grim and low, then as a team we sit down and re-strategize and come up with new methods of turning this around. On the other hand, if the figure is appealing, we don't lay low but continue optimizing and working on how to improve it further.

Pros

  • Hyperbloc architecture -- the ability to see changes to models instantly cascade through all the models.
  • Function agnostic platform - the ability to adapt the platform to many different use cases and integrate those use cases into a connected planning environment.
  • Cloud architecture. Security and product enhancements come automatically.
Christopher Pope profile photo
  • Multiple ways to show and deliver your data. Customization and adjustments are easy to make for each data point.
  • Adding extra features and integrations, sharing this data among the organization to have input from all departments.
  • Allows for real time analytics and data which is crucial in the real estate market where everything is constantly changing every minute.

Cons

  • The actions could be improved - make it obvious what the sources and targets of the are so we don't have to guess or put them in the action names. Also get a native scheduler! That's so simple and it's very frustrating and expensive to have to build/buy our own.
  • Reporting and UI still have a long way to go. Simple things like being able to alphabetize/order what you see on the screen, or add a rich color pallet to choose from.
  • User access management could improve. We need to have model level admins that don't have access to everything in the workspace. Also the tenant admin space doesn't work effectively. I can't remove a user from all models simultaneously. I also can't see all models a user has access to from the tenant admin space.

  • Terrible UI.
  • Shaky integration with Salesforce.
  • Support for SAP is not great.

I don't think we could function without the collaboration capabilities built into Anaplan that replaced disparate Excel files in the workforce planning model

Usability

There is a dependency in this rating - in that I find Anaplan extremely easy to use, but I've spent the necessary time developing a strong understanding of the platform. Once you understand how to use it, the platform is flexible, easy to use, and fun to use.

Reliability and Availability

In nearly 3 years, I have only had 1 issue of being unable to access my model for an unplanned maintenance. Even planned maintenance windows are handled during low traffic hours on the weekend.

Performance

Anaplan9.0
Based on 1 answer
Everything is calculated in memory in the cloud. It's nearly instantaneous updates when you make changes. The only time things get a little slow is when you have a massive model with very intricate calculations...but "slow" for Anaplan is not what I would call "slow" for something like Hyperion. We used to have Hyperion calcs that ran for 60 mins before you could use data. The equivalent would be 60 seconds in Anaplan.

Support

Anaplan8.1
Based on 2 answers
I feel like the support team is a little lacking in product knowledge. Several times I have contacted them to get help, and ended up finding a solution to my own problem before the team could get back to me with anything useful. I have also submitted a few bugs, and never got updates to when they were fixed in later releases.

In-Person Training

Anaplan3.0
Based on 1 answer
The in-person training is simply not worth the cost. After a few weeks of playing in Anaplan, I went to the basic training and knew more than the person teaching it. a year down the road, I was the first person to complete the advance training, and again could have been teaching the class better than the person running the session. Spend some time on your own trying out different things and you will get all the understanding you need to be successful.

Online Training

Anaplan5.0
Based on 1 answer
I'm giving this a 5 simply for the anapedia outline of calculations. The online videos and trainings leave a lot to be desired, but having anapedia around to help you understand calculations has been helpful. The drawback to anapedia is the depth they go into for calculations, it is lackluster at times. Because of that, I have been working through a much more in-depth look at each calculation on my website for users to reference: http://www.anaplanguru.com/formulas/

Alternatives Considered

Modeling and what I call the "brains" is much better in Anaplan. You can create several different model types that can all feed into a single budget or plan. What Anaplan really lacks is the ad-hoc ability that is in Hyperion. You can't identify your dimensions and find the data sitting in that spot, the data just isn't setup that way in Anaplan. This makes answering some detail questions more difficult than it would be in Hyperion. for that reason, we are using Anaplan for the modeling, and Hyperion for the data storage. It would be nice to be able to sunset Hyperion though....

The speed of QlikView can be very slow when I would attempt to set up the dashboard with Microsoft Access. SAP Analytics Cloud has much tighter integration with our data sources which allowed for much more real-time integration as opposed to batch processing. This allowed for faster, out-of-the-box usage. A must for the speed of our continuous release society.

Scalability

Anaplan7.0
Based on 1 answer
It's going to handle most of what you can throw at it. The problem lies in the sparsity of some datasets. When you have over 5ish dimensions of sparse data, the size of the model gets bloated for not much value. In several cases, I have had to adapt my model to account for sparsity in a way that minimized use of space, but also made interacting with the data more cumbersome.

Return on Investment

  • Workforce Planning efficiency - so much easier than excel to maintain sensitive information planning
  • Long range plan lead time - the old excel model took weeks to update. The Anaplan model takes hours
Joe Bradbury profile photo
  • The ability to perform real-time, and near real-time analysis for the functions that involve the transmission of data is a huge contributor to positive ROI.
  • Being able to integrate CRM Data and SAP data cleanly together and report on it with amazing precision is a huge plus and adds to our bottom line.
  • We spend less time on reposting by storing a lot of data and automate reports that are needed on a regular basis.
  • The capabilities, such as the business intelligence platform, predictive data analysis, and training algorithms, all help with positive decision making and boost the bottom line.
