Asana

Asana functions particularly well in scenarios with well-established teams with well-established processes and a mature SDLC. The reason is that Asana can be configured to do many, many different things, and be used in many, many different ways, and with that power comes a lot of responsibility to figure out your process before you try and automate it. It's software, not magic.

InVision

InVision excels on simple prototypes. Basic functionality, mobile or web, is easy to mock up and easy for users to interact with. The projects are easy to share and distribute, even for offline usage. For simple through complex end user testing or validation of functionality InVision is an excellent fit for the task

Pros

  • Cross-team communication is always a challenge, but Asana helps make information transparent and accessible to all members of the team.
  • It's easy to share with individuals outside of the organization and still control the flow of information.
  • Being able to link in other design resources like InVision prototypes is a huge time saver.
  • Integrating with Slack makes much of our necessary communication automatic.

Cons

  • Asana does a lot, so it can sometimes be hard to find the right place to be to find the tools you need.
  • Organization is only as good as you make it and just because a system makes sense to the person that creates it does not mean it will make sense to anyone else.
  • It can be challenging to find the information you need via search.
Kirk Brote profile photo
  • Hasn't been a lot of new features added lately
  • Users have to set up an account
  • Looking forward to more innovations concerning developer handoff

Asana is adding more useful features and it makes the work of their entire team more organized and more efficient. It really helps us in achieving greater achievements as a team. It helps us to earn more revenue since we have more satisfied clients, simply because we are able to finish their project on time or even before the due date.

They don't fix everything, but they have certainly gone the extra mile for us. When we were frustrated with a recent change that altered our default view of every project, changing it from all projects being visible to just incomplete projects being visible, they wrote a custom script to change all of our default views back for us, so we didn't have to manually click 3,000 times (we have over a thousand projects).

Alternatives Considered

We loved the fun design hacks (e.g., flying celebratory unicorns when you complete a task, Tab+B puts tabby cats on your screen temporarily; themed backgrounds). We're marketers–can you blame us?! But in all seriousness, we chose Asana over other similar products because of the detail that Asana could go into when tasking out subtasks to individuals with separate deadlines. Managers are also able to view the tasks that team members are working on to manage workload. It's also helped increase visibility of task details amongst team members to provide background on projects they might be looped into in the future.

InVision has a better user experience and is easier/nicer to use. However Proto.io lets you design mocked up pages without a need of a designer. Proto.io has a very limited free tier. With InVision you can get a lot done with the free tier or basic tier. InVision studio has great potential in making InVision a one stop shop for design.

  • Time is money. A small number of people working on prototypes saves time for the many other people on different levels on the tech stack and departments that need to be in sync on the product (sales, marketing, QA, etc...)
  • InVision helps you set a clear target for development, which is highly motivating.
