Auth0
Auth0 is mainly a solution for authentication and authorization. And it does what it promises in that aspect, but I also find it very helpful when it comes to customer support because I can see a lot of crucial information about user activity. So we have allowed our customer services team members to access auth0 backend log files for troubleshooting user login issues, etc. And the backend administration site is fairly easy to understand. Metadata along with Rules and Hooks allow for flexibility for token generation . Multiple ways to authenticate.

[Microsoft] Azure Active Directory is perfect for single sign on. We have all our SaaS applications integrated with it. Also, the opportunity to have a single place for all the Microsoft Applications and Saas Applications using one account.Sometimes, the hybrid configuration is not appropriated for some internal non windows applications, due to the complexity.

Pros
Auth0
- The Auth0 documentation provides plenty of examples and tutorials for users to get up and running quickly
- Auth0 is very flexible, it has a lot of pre-build authentication methods but also allows you to customize your method of authentication if you need to build off an internal provider
- The Auth0 user interface is generally intuitive and it has detailed logs to assist with auditing
- Auth0 comes at a very competitive price-point if your platform doesn't require a huge number of users (the free tier alone could be sufficient for many)

- Conditional Access -- this is one of the biggest tools that any admin needs when it comes to securing when, where, and how users are accessing information. Especially if the information contains sensitive data types.
- Multi-factor Authentication -- we have all our employees configured for MFA. This is incredibly easy to configure with Azure, as well as defining when MFA should be used through Conditional Access.
- Audit Logs -- being able to track and identify a user's activity is pretty critical, especially when in incident response mode.

Cons
Auth0
- Price point for ALL features can get a bit pricey. But they have a startup plan which helps big time. Developer plans start at $23/mo and do not include all features.
- Actions, rules, hooks, and email customization are great features, but the UI is a bit tough sometimes, not very responsive to screen size and code editors are cut off in a difficult place to maneuver.

Azure Active Directory
- There are a lot of features, so it can get confusing to get to where you want to go
- Some areas do not offer as much granularity as desired
- Hard to find certain features that are synonymous with on-premises Active Directory

There isn't a clear method to get a hold of support when trouble arises if you're on their standard plan. You can file a support ticket and they generally are responsive. I've often been able to find similar questions to the questions I've had when it comes to support in their ticket history, however, some have been closed without a satisfactory conclusion for the original poster.

Microsoft has offered Azure Active Directory as a solution for a couple of decades now, so they have seen and anticipated almost any issue that an organization may face and can therefore help. The cloud offering of Azure Active Directory offers some additional "self healing" or monitoring services that can minimize the need for a service call. However, as with most large companies supporting a fast growing market, there may be some gaps in service knowledge (and particularly processing) from the front line / tier one staff as they follow a corporate script at first contact.

Okta is very similar to Auth0, but we got some references that used Auth0 so we decided for that, most because it was recommended. With Amazon Cognito was the same, there were not experience with any of these before so we went with Auth0 as first experience and stayed with it.

I've worked with both Okta and Auth0 at various clients. Consistently, we find that Azure Active Directory provides a more seamless experience, better integration with IT tooling, and a more developer-friendly experience. In the past Azure AD has lacked some of the customization capabilities that Okta and Auth0 provide, but that has changed (especially with External Identities).

Return on Investment
Auth0
- With Auth0, we saved a lot of time and money implementing identity management that would work across all of our services instead of doing it ourselves.
- There's no going back from Auth0. We've become really dependent on them.
- It reduces a lot of burden on our side to be GDPR compliant.

- AAD has saved my organization a lot of time in user setups, restoring mailboxes or individual messages, auditing logins/logoffs or data changes and running reports.
- It added functionality we did not previously have, such as reporting on user behavior in their systems (what they work on and what applications are used).
- My IT Support Department has benefited greatly from adding AAD by being able to see software update needs for each workstation, managing startup items running in the system, checking versions of definitions and policies applied to each workstation and much more.
