I have found that Autodesk Tinkercad is best for creating simple 3D models for printing. I use it to add text or modifications to 3D models of artifacts for my museum, including labels and support structures for artifacts to stand on. I also use it to create promotional materials, like 3D models of artifacts with our logo on them, which we can print and pass out at events. I would not use Autodesk Tinkercad for more complex 3D modeling or editing 3D models. It's really designed for basic creation and modification, and in those areas it is extremely useful!

It's great for complex and large projects eg the automotive or aerospace industry as it. It has a good way of managing and controlling all the large volumes of models. But it's not suited for doing small projects quickly on the other hand. Like one-off bespoke designs.

Pros

Autodesk

  • Tinkercad is a great baseline CAD program. This program is easy to implement and train people in.
  • After on a short period of time my students are able to create complex forms using Tinkercads pre-generated shapes and holes.
  • The Tinkercad provided projects aid in pushing the learning experience even further and reinforce the ideas that I train on and help my students explore the program before designing their own complex sculptural forms.

Cons

Autodesk

  • ADVANCED CADD TOOLS
  • ADVANCED SLICING TOOLS
  • AIMED TOWARD CHILDREN IN SOME ASPECTS
  • I WOULD LOVE TO SEE INTEGRATED TRAINING IN THE PROGRAM ITSELF

  • The thing that I need to keep all the parts, usually in common with other assemblies, in the same folder is very uncomfortable if I need to revise a single component.
  • I would prefer to have 1 file for each part and just select it when needed. (with Solidedge this is possible).

Compared to other Cad software which it competes against, it's by far the least user-friendly out there. As most of the user interface seems to be in line with the Windows XP era. The way some features are used is very dated, going back to how early cad software was used back in the 80/90 and has not been designed for younger users. Nor is it similar to another type of software out today making it harder to get used to it

      Alternatives Considered

      Autodesk

PTC Creo is a more professional software and is great and I used it for many years at my old job, but tinkercad is great for younger students in my opinion and it is nice that it can be accessed online and as a teacher it seems easier to manage. It also has more kid friendly built in tutorials and I think is easier to pick up and learn. Many teachers I think would be overwhelmed by Creo and it also has more of a cost than tinker

I find DraftSight as a pure 2d integration of Siemens NX CAD. They don't collide, they are useful for different needs.
