BlackLine

Blackline is an excellent tool for balance sheet reconciliations and month-end close tasks. If you need to get control of your financial close processes, implementing the tool is a great start. It can do it. The variable is company and staff adoption. The other great thing about the tool is the organization supporting it. Blackline organization does a fantastic job in the following ways: (1) Asking for feedback on how the tool can be improved (2) Hosting free webinars/workshops giving novice and expert users and admins the opportunity to increase their competence and, ultimately, customer effectiveness (3) Experts from the salesperson who sold the solution, to the implementer, to Blackline Support....they all know what they are talking about....true SMEs (4) A 9 rating from me has to be earned and Blackline does the job. A solid tool for a fluid business world!

FloQast

We use FloQast for our entire close process - from reconciliations to checklist items. This helps my team stay focused - move through the close process quickly, and there are fewer items that get forgotten or overlooked.

  • Integrated reporting features are extremely helpful to do quick and customized analysis
  • Visibility to task and process status across the organization allows us to identify and focus on our biggest pain points and areas of improvement
  • Near seamless integration with existing reporting software and ERP systems makes it easier to use real-time data rather than waiting on periodic reports and processes to analyze data

Cons

BlackLine

  • The User Interface is clunky and strange to navigate. It's fluid somehow at the same time. Perhaps organization efforts would help.
  • Their Support organization could use training. I've had too many frustrating conversations because of (or about) basic communication skills. They're all very polite, in my experience, but lacking in basics (e.g. come prepared to a meeting/call). I've explicitly and constructively shared this with them with almost no change.

There are some processes that we currently use that cannot be done in BlackLine. Our users don't want to change their processes or learn new processes even though it would make their jobs easier. We have very few users who have adopted BlackLine fully, and management has not made it a requirement to use the application.

When needed they are there. In 3 years we haven't needed much with regards to support after our implementation. That being said I feel scheduled consulting and personal reach outs would go a long way to helping support customers as new features and opportunities are pushed out.

Our experience with Customer Support has been great. We have not had any issues in communication nor in assistance from the customer service team. They have always been helpful in assisting us with either technical issues, set up of new users, simple questions regarding updates or complicated ones about integrations.

Trainings are available for all topics on the BlackLine U portal. These were incredibly helpful when first starting with BlackLine to get the hang of it. Trainings are useful for any module. I have personally used this to teach myself how to use the tasks and variance modules, which are now fully utilized by my organization. The support team is also very helpful in training our team on anything additional we have needed.

Change is something you deal with on any new implementation. Users were already experienced with SAP Gen template. This was a new way of doing things so education of everyone was critical to success. Selling folks on this was an easier way to do their job was the key to success

Alternatives Considered

BlackLine

Blackline outperformed both FloQast and Vena in our RFP. The staff felt that Blackline was the most user-friendly. Both FloQast and Vena try to sell you on linking to already saved documents instead of saving documents onto their systems. They're both more of an Excel Add-On. We felt that Blackline allowed more flexibility and I actually like the idea of having support saved in the reconciliation system. Also, you don't necessarily need Excel experience to use it and we have some staff (non-accountants) that we wanted to use the system to track grants, claim submission due dates, etc., not related to month-end close. These staff members easily grasped Blackline but struggled with Vena and FloQast.

FloQast

FloQast stacks up extremely well to BlackLine, at a fraction of the cost. While BlackLine may have more top-end options, much of it is not applicable to the mid-market space. FloQast would instantly provide a significant boost to any mid-market company, while BlackLine would be akin to "taking a rocket-ship to the grocery store".FloQast is simply the better option.

  • Our organization manages our whole accounting and financial lifecycle in this one unified, secure, and efficient system, as well as easily receiving a wider picture of tasks and processes.
  • It completely automates our intercompany reconciliation and bank reconciliation process as well as eliminates the need for excel.
