  • The User Interface is clunky and strange to navigate. It's fluid somehow at the same time. Perhaps organization efforts would help.
  • Their Support organization could use training. I've had too many frustrating conversations because of (or about) basic communication skills. They're all very polite, in my experience, but lacking in basics (e.g. come prepared to a meeting/call). I've explicitly and constructively shared this with them with almost no change.
I ranked it high at a 7/10 primarily because there's not much competition. It generally gets the job done, but they could really up their game with healthy competition. There are a few other modules, like Consolidations and Variance Analysis, we do not use and could benefit us.

For our use, it's overkill as a glorified checklist. This is our primary use and, while important, is pretty expensive, given how many user licenses we need.

We are beginning to enable multiple subsidiaries and multiple currency. It's capabilities here and the knowledge fo the Product Manager are encouraging. Seems straightforward, conceptually.

Well suited for fast growing companies that have multiple team members reconciling different accounts across the company, this allows for organization of reconciliations all in one place without any room for error.

BlackLine is well suited for Finance teams who are looking to better understand their close process and specifically pin-point areas of weakness. This in turn leads to more viability and efficiency for this critical business process. The tool adapts well to your business as it continues to evolve.

BlackLine is great for Accounting teams that want to get a better handle on month end close activities. Particularly, it helps teams stay coordinated under pressure to ensure no balls are dropped. It scales well with your business and is fairly easy to use. Pricing is fair and competitive.

It’s not suited to be an all in one Accounting solution, hence you’ll need to pair this software with other tools.

BlackLine Review: "Simple and Automated Account Reconciliations"

Score 9 out of 10

Blackline is being used by some of the business units that I manage. It solves the problem of balance sheet account reconciliations and to ensure that we are SOX compliant.
  • A simple way to do balance sheet reconciliations.
  • Web-based. Cloud-based.
  • Intuitive and simple to use.
  • Automate some reconciliations steps.
  • Support can be weak at times
  • Cloud-based so updates are pushed through to users
Blackline is useful in streamlining and automating the account reconciliation progress. It is a very intuitive and simple to use so it doesn't require a lot of training. The approval process is done through email notifications so it is more hands-off for managers. This will definitely save a lot of time especially for people coming in from a more Excel based reconciliation process.

User Review: "Blackline - Great reconciliation tool"

Score 8 out of 10
Vetted Review

Blackline is being used within the finance department at our organization. Blackline is used mostly for the review of month end tasks and is relied upon for financial statement review controls. It provides a good way to organize and track tasks to ensure all parts of the close process are completed and reviewed.
  • Previously, we were using Excel spreadsheets to keep track of tasks during month end. Blackline has provided a way to improve the review process for management by keeping all tasks in one place, building consistency, and being able to use dashboards to see the overall progress.
  • The reconciliation features assists in providing analysis and documentation for all flux analysis all in 1 place. You can upload documents or link to files (such as in Box or dropbox) easily. Overall the tool is easy to use and really has helped organize our closing process
  • Blackline has enabled our team to quickly compare general ledger data, investigate discrepancies, and attach supporting documentation. It has simplified our close process and gives management easy viewing access to keep track of the teams progress.
  • Implementation was somewhat slow and a bit more difficult then expected. There is not much flexibility in the system so you have to adapt to it. For example, once you create a task, you cannot simply delete it. You have to create an end date for it and it will stay in the system forever.
  • There are limited number of licenses based on the agreement; price for additional licenses is high.
Overall, Blackline has allowed our team to streamline the close process and keep track of tasks. Blackline is suitable for companies with large amounts of data and tasks that requires a quick reconciliation tool. It also includes an very detailed audit history which was great for our evidence of review. Also since its a cloud based system, we have the ability to close remotely when needed and auditors are able to access information even when they are not in our offices. For a mid-large sized company with multiple close processes and tasks, Blackline is a great tool.
