Cerner HealtheIntent

My honest opinion is if an organization is fully running a Cerner EMR, it is almost not avoidable choice to use HealtheIntent. From performance and consistency views, it performs very well simply because HealtheIntent and Cerner EMR are from the same place. From the cost perspective, it's up to the contract. But in a general sense, it is more cost effective rather than running a separate analytics framework. If an organization is running a mix of Cerner and other clinical IT system, the answer is all but case by case.

The overall product itself is first class. The Hyland training department and the material provided is first class as well. The solution is scalable and agile. Because a solution can be configured with no coding required, it can meet needs without additional staffing. Solutions with Hyland can also be built on to. So, say you start with a small scan, index, and retrieve function and then later want to add on a workflow piece, you can take the same information, system and add on to the solution. From there, an organization can add on additional functions like work view/case management, advanced capture, and other modules to grow the solution.

Pros

Cerner HealtheIntent

  • Reliability means Cerner HealtheIntent hardly ever goes down
  • Cerner HealtheIntent can be customized for our business needs
  • We have our own Cerner HealtheIntent server instead of using the cloud

  • Integration with third party applications is amazing. Being able to get documents and information through email, folder importing, mainframe screens, other applications, and xml/csv streams was simple, powerful, and effective.
  • The Application Enabler utility is one of the best I've seen which allows integration with 3rd party applications to easily pull up and locate related information within an Onbase system.
  • The administration of the platform is simple and with minimal training can be maintained by a regular system administrator.

Cons

Cerner HealtheIntent

  • Metadata management in HealtheIntent should be improved. For example, we could find similar looking data sources (for example, diagnosis tables with similar names) but it was hard to distinguish and know which one is the one in production. It was because several data stewards loaded the same table with a different purpose (with similar tables names). And HealtheIntent doesn't have a metadata "for a test" or "for development", which makes hard to manage versions of one data source.
  • To run a SQL in HealtheIntent, there is a time limit of only 10 minutes. Also, there is no delicate configuration of query execution. It may not need a lot of functions like Toad or SQL developer, but what HealtheIntent provides is very limited.
  • Similar to the one above, HealtheIntent may need better metadata management for users. It is hard to find a table that I need, even to find out the existence of the table. Basic statistics like the size of a table, # of rows may be helpful for users.

  • Lack of feature parity between clients. Some features are supported in Thick Client, but not in Unity Client (Or the other way around).
  • Confusing menu structures within administrative programs. Lots of bouncing between programs in order to configure or tweak things.
  • Report Services is an additional license and should be included with the base product.

As long as you know the document type you're looking for, OnBase is great. If you don't know the document type, you could have to look through many to find what you need. Or you could use a Custom Query, but then you have to learn which one to use. This is for the general user trying to retrieve documents. An Admin, or someone that uses OnBase daily will not have this issue and will consider easier to use.

I have had exceptional support from Hyland; however, I am a direct customer from Hyland and receive support directly from Hyland support technicians. I have heard complaints from other customers who have partner relationships as then the support is 100% driven through the partner and you are dependent on the skills and abilities of your partner corporate support team.

Alternatives Considered

Cerner HealtheIntent

We have had Cerner HealtheIntent for over 10 years and it has been a strong EMR. Other EMRs have been OK. They have just done the job, but haven't lived up to their promise. When a patch is put out for Cerner HealtheIntent, it actually works without bugs. Reaching support for Cerner HealtheIntent is easier and our issues are taken care of in a timely manner.

We utilized another product prior to OnBase but we were alerted that there were possible issues with solvency of the company. We were able to switch to OnBase. There are two other groups in our company that are using products (Alfresco and an internally created program) to share PDF files of drawings with others. While I have not used these programs here are some comments I have heard. These two particular software programs are limited to sharing only PDF files with users. This is to make sure that the native file is not downloaded and edited by anyone who so desires to make changes. Control of the master electronic drawing file is not possible in these programs

Return on Investment

Cerner HealtheIntent

  • ROI may be depending on the contract. But even if an organization is spending the same money for either homegrown analytics or HealtheIntent, HealtheIntent provides more agility of project or cost spending. If you don't like it you can discontinue anytime.
  • The negative one is, HealtheIntent is a new product in Cerner and at this point, it may not be capable of everything like homegrown analytics. The question would be the future of HealtheIntent and will be able to cover what you need soon.
  • If an organization is pursuing a standard, generic analytics and reporting (such as the combination of Oracle and Tableau), HealtheIntent is great. If not (for example, running R and d3.js for specific cases), the cost of migration to HealtheIntent will skyrocket.

OnBase by Hyland

  • We have leveraged OnBase to automate many tasks that have been paper driven in the past and are now electronic.
  • Because OnBase is so versatile, it has been the solution for projects that otherwise would have caused the system to purchase another application.
