I recommend using this Cisco 1850 access point for offices, factories, schools, colleges, hospitals, and other indoor environments. It has great support for a medium density of simultaneous connections and has interesting features to mitigate and improve the quality and strength of the wifi signal. The captive portal brings more security and control of who is accessing the wifi network and prohibits unauthorized access. The price is great, and it has Cisco's reliability in technology.

Cons

Cisco

  • Management software has been spotty, such as DNA Center (early versions pre v2).
  • Software has been unreliable (mainly AirOS).
  • Not supporting older APs has been when moving to new versions has been painful and caused multiple business complications such as audit support and mass AP replacements.

Cisco

  • There needs to be an easier way to see which devices are being heavier used, so as to determine needed adjustments.
  • It would be good to have more in-depth access to what locations connected devices are navigating to.
  • Cost. These devices could be a little more competitive if the cost were lower. Meraki prices itself out of some sales.

The Cisco Meraki MR web interface is best in class when it comes to network management. While some networking knowledge is needed to understand what you are doing, no specialized training in any one specific operating system is required to design a whole network.

We have rolled out the [Cisco] Catalyst 9100 Access Points as our previous models have come end of life/end of sale. We are more than pleased with the performance that the [Cisco] Catalyst 9100 Access Points have provided our locations and have not run into any issues during or after deployment.

Meraki support is usually top notch. The are quick to respond and stick with an issue until it is resolved. One of the difficulties I've had with Meraki MRs is the limited ability the customer has in troubleshooting. Much of the more technical aspects of resolution can only be accessed by the Meraki support team, meaning dedicated IT teams are reliant on them when more complicated issues arise.

      Alternatives Considered

      Cisco

Cisco is the preferred WiFi solution worldwide. Typically any support issues are resolved with an internet search. The Cisco solution is typically one of the first to release new WiFi standard-based solutions. Also, their solution works the first time out of the box. Many of the other products may require a call to their technical support because of software flaws or unsupported scenarios. Not so with Cisco. It works out of the box, has many available use cases, and has great support if needed.

Considering my campus has 3000 of these, and the programs that come with the Cisco Access Points make it really easy to know exactly which Access Points are down, and being able to troubleshoot through SSH from the office is a God sent.

      Return on Investment

      Cisco

      • Cisco was able to provide a product that met specific business requirements because they have offered a wide range of devices with various feature sets.
      • 9100s have a 3rd radio that allows for a lot of additional security features
      • 9100s have the same level of reliability and performance as the previous generation and continue to impress.

      • For bigger organizations ROI is really good, because the network is always operational, and no time is spent fixing the network.
      • The users do not need to power cycle devices or do anything else, everything can be managed remotely from the Meraki dashboard.
      • For small businesses with only 1 AP, the ROI is not that great since a cheaper AP can do the same job, and it may need occasional reboot which the staff can do easily without any hassle.
