Cisco HyperFlex

We have a varied workload (as mentioned earlier, right from SQL and NoSQL databases, VDI, Microsoft Exchange, SAP Oracle, Cloud Foundry etc. etc.) and for all our types of work, we've found HX absolutely stable in all aspects. HX finds great suitability if you are looking for creating a data centre with a high level of availability (stretched cluster - that too with just 2 nodes per data centre). Not only are we early adopters of HX, but since its implementation we have shared our success stories with many customers of ours, as well as in the reference calls from Cisco. Those who adopted HX on our reference have shared very good feedback.

Nutanix AOS

Nutanix is a good solution if:
  1. You cannot afford to have your services go offline.
  2. You want peace of mind that comes from total hardware redundancy.
  3. You are comfortable running commands through a terminal emulator.
  4. You want a system that largely manages itself in terms of keeping your VMs online.
  5. You're concerned more about bullets 1-4 than you are cost.
Nutanix is probably not a good solution for you if:
  1. Cost is your primary concern. In this case, you would probably be better served using something like Microsoft's Hyper-V replication, which is included with the cost of a Windows Server license.
  2. 24x7 uptime is not critical, there are cheaper and easier solutions to achieve near-constant uptime (see bullet one, above).
  3. You are not comfortable working at a command line or don't want to pay for tech support.

Pros

Cisco HyperFlex

  • Reliability of services
  • Flexible and scalable cluster

Nutanix AOS

  • One-click upgrades; whether it's hypervisor, firmware, disk or other updates. This feature has drastically decreased complexity and administration time.
  • Data Locality. Not all hyperconverged technology is created equal. When I first purchased Nutanix they were the only vendor (and as far as I know, still are) that made sure the storage a VM used was on the same host that VM was running on. Given a normal operating state, the [storage] network is literally only used for replication data.
  • They got rid of traditional RAID. Nutanix uses software to determine where a VM's storage should be written and replicated to. This dramatically decreases I/O when changing the number of nodes in a cluster, be it on purpose or during a failure scenario. Ex. adding a new node: If one uses RAID arrays then enough space has to be set aside to create a new array that includes the new node, then all the information has to be copied over, and the old array destroyed. RAID arrays do not grow and shrink gracefully so Nutanix has designed a better solution.
  • The Nutanix management interface was built on HTML5. No more flash headaches!

Cons

Cisco HyperFlex

  • Local storage.
  • Workload limitation.

Nutanix AOS

  • Can be priced high at times.
  • The one downside I have working with Nutanix is the sales team. They seem to try to add in extra goodies to sales quotes or push for extras that you don't really need and you have to tell them to take them out. Don't be afraid to push back on them.
  • Need to analyze sizing with sales team to ensure right sizing.

Support has been phenomenal, although continually hearing that some bugs will
get improved in the next AOS update is getting exhausting.

Alternatives Considered

Cisco HyperFlex

HyperFlex is truly hyper-converged and easier to scale than traditional compute and storage.

We looked at both Simplivity and Cisco HyperFlex. Both are pretty good in their own right. Simplivity was very 'efficient' in the way they handled data, but we didn't like the idea of a propitiatory hardware card. Cisco's HyperFlex was our second choice, but we were so impressed with what Nutanix had done for us already, that we were already leaning toward that.

Return on Investment

Cisco HyperFlex

  • HX made positive impact on our overall business objective and helped in reducing operational and capital expenditures almost by 60%
  • We used to have huge footprint of FC SAN storage and highly skilled SME's to manage the FC SAN environments. HX helped in getting rid of costly SAN investments and we could move the skilled SMEs on higher work stack. With HX, we are able to effectively manage day to day operations with less skilled resources.
  • We also benefitted largely from the single OEM support (Cisco end to end for HX, network fabric and hypervisor). In earlier case, we used to log service requests to SAN vendor, Hypervisor vendor and network fabric vendor separately. In case of inter-related issues between the vendors, our business used to suffer. These all challenges are removed by HX adoption. This is helping us support the business with maximum uptime ever. Our service SLA's are also improved by 70%

Nutanix AOS

  • We have replaced 3/4 a rack of legacy hardware into a 2U, 4node cluster, reducing vmware licensing costs
  • Scales very easy, add cables, and copy port config over... new system is ready to go in under an hour
  • reduction of support costs of legacy hardware
