Considered Both Products
Cloudinary
Chose Cloudinary
Cloudinary was without a doubt the leading application when it came to meeting our business needs. There's not much competition when it comes to scalable CDNs and for us it was an easy decision without much else to consider in terms of contenders in the market.
Chose Cloudinary
We evaluated Bitmovin, Fastly, Anvato, etc. There is no one solution that gives both photo/video transformation with realtime availability.

My experience with AEM has been limited to interacting with it through others, and so this information should be taken with that in mind, but my impressions from talking with the service engineers managing this system in our enterprise (in a previous role) was that it could be …
Chose Cloudinary
Cloudinary seemed to be the most sophisticated with the most documentation and platform support. Other solutions seemed to be a lot harder to implement, however, due to the good documentation and API samples on their GitHub we were able to implement it nicely. Additionally, …

Chose MediaValet
MediaValet provides a lot of the same features as other DAM solutions on the market today, such as advanced search functionality and tagging capabilities but it overall won over for us because of its ease of use. Some of the more advanced features on the other tools evaluated …

Chose MediaValet
MediaValet is much better and easier to use than File Explorer. MediaValet lets us search for photos, control who can access them, and not worry about our assets being deleted at random. This is critical for a government organization that oftentimes needs to search for assets …
Chose MediaValet
Sharepoint is more useful from a data standpoint. MediaValet is much easier to navigate, organize and view/share content quickly.
Chose MediaValet
Asset sharing and organization is better, more user friendly, and more appealing within MediaValet. The layout and flexibility give these portals a much more professional look and feel. Both internally and externally we have appreciated the output of these specific portals much …
Chose MediaValet
I have not used any other product like MediaValet.
Chose MediaValet
They really are very different platforms. MediaValet offers much more control over who has access to files and how they are downloaded, as well as offering conversions of some files such as JPEG to PNG or TIFF. Also, through user profiles, you can grant access to a specific …
Chose MediaValet
I was not part of the original selection for MediaValet, but I am very thankful to be using it now.
Chose MediaValet
1. Business file systems - this ends up being based on the logic of whomever first set it up, and is typically not very flexible, and terrible search capabilities.
2. Teams - a little better than above due to some control of access, but still painful searching process.
3. Custom …

I think MediaValet far exceeds the ability of Dropbox Business in many instances - - It offers a better search engine. You can find more easily searchable files without having to actually re-name individual files. It offers multi-segmentation. Files can sit across several …

Chose MediaValet
I have used asset management systems based in on-premise storage such as Drobos or other raid systems and web-based DAMs, such as Canto which are more comparable to how MediaValet works on a cloud-based system. Nothing beats MediaValet in reliability, ease of use, and customer …
Chose MediaValet
I'd used one with another company called MediaBank which had been very difficult to use—to the point where I was wary of using a D.A.M. Have been pleasantly surprised with MediaValet after that first exposure to D.A.M. systems.
Chose MediaValet
MediaValet has a much better search tool. The site map is visible immediately. Videos play and upload much more smoothly on MediaValet.
Chose MediaValet
More cost efficient and better searching capabilities.

Cloudinary handles pretty much anything you have related to images. From serving them up efficiently to adding transformations on the fly, there's really little this service doesn't do. Their pricing plans allow you to grow into the right levels and their website dashboards are very helpful. I would easily recommend this for all but the simplest of use cases.

MediaValet is well suited for organizations that need a centralized place to manage and share a large volume of marketing assets across multiple teams or locations. It works especially well when brand consistency is important and when assets need to be shared with outside vendors or partners.
It is less appropriate for very small teams with minimal assets or simple storage needs, where a basic file-sharing tool may be sufficient. It can also feel like more than what’s needed if teams are not actively tagging or organizing assets, since the value comes from consistent usage and upkeep.

Pros
  • Cloudinary is the best in the market for photo and video transformations.
  • Cloudinary takes customer's requests for special features and implements them very quickly.

  • I love that we can add keywords. It makes finding assets very easy.
  • I love the fact we can make lightboxes. It makes sending assets to different people easy.
  • They are always adding more features to MediaValet to make it better.
  • I love that we're not limited to which types of files we can upload to MediaValet.

Cons
  • Currently, they don't have an officially supported Drupal module -so it's quite painful to implement.
  • If you have a site that has a lot of visitors then it's possible to get quite large bills out of the blue if you get a massive spike e.g. black Friday.
  • The UI for the backend and documentation could do with a lot of improvements.

  • More flexibility/features when using Lightboxes
  • Replace an old version of an asset with a newer one without having to check-out, then check-in
  • Sharing an asset or a set of assets via a share link -- would be great to generate shorter, dynamic URLs for sharing as opposed to the longer string URLs it currently generates

It is not only likely, but we have been doing it for more than 6 years. We have even had the service since before I joined the company. The service works well for me and I hope that this service will continue to be renewed next year, as not having it would make my job more complicated.

Usability
Cloudinary is very easy to use and offers fast way to upload your images, files and videos to their servers. Then they give you quick ways t implement those files or images onto your website using their API or just a normal URL. They also give you very fast ways to make edits to those files and include them in the url.

MediaValet is easy to use in government because it's very intuitive. We have a wide range of internet skills at my organization, and everyone can use this tool with minimal/no training. It's great on an administrative side as well. Admins can control who sees and downloads photos. This is perfect for our organization, since some things can be kept private across departments.

Support Rating
We rarely use their support. But when we need it they are always there. They provide great consultation and suggestions to help us manage our costs and resources better. In the last 8 years perhaps we have contacted them 3 or 4 times - which is really really great

The team is very responsive to requests and makes a point to provide feedback or status updates before confirming solutions.

I mainly use MediValet to send special medical images to our partners. Collaboration with other companies is very simplified through MediaValet. The qualitatively uploaded images can be excactly assigned and organised through various filters. It is much clearer and easier for our partners to understand when the images have been accurately labelled and assigned beforehand.

Alternatives Considered
My experience with AEM has been limited to interacting with it through others, and so this information should be taken with that in mind, but my impressions from talking with the service engineers managing this system in our enterprise (in a previous role) was that it could be challenging to integrate effectively into a large-scale organization with demands on security. The biggest reason I selected Cloudinary was price-based; their free plan serves my needs as a freelancer quite well.

MediaValet provides a lot of the same features as other DAM solutions on the market today, such as advanced search functionality and tagging capabilities but it overall won over for us because of its ease of use. Some of the more advanced features on the other tools evaluated made them a little bit more cumbersome to use on a day to day basis in addition to overall setup. We found the setup with MediaValet to be extremely quick and easy where with other programs the time to get up and running was significantly longer.

  • Images are essential to our product and using Cloudinary has allowed us to serve them up in a cost-effective and efficient way. Not having to worry about your images frees you up to tackle the real challenges for your product.

  • We can download photos from anywhere. I can add, or access images from home as easily as work.
  • We have literally freed a person who would be in the office to go take pictures of our beautiful state.
  • The downloads are the same quality as the uploads!
