Scale Computing HC3

I think in a smaller environment, Scale provides a great way to get into a virtualized environment. The setup is very simple and it doesn't require significant knowledge of IT infrastructure in order to get up and running. Scale doesn't offer the advanced insight into storage and application resource groups as their competitors do, however it is not designed for advanced users. It is more of a closed box and support handles most requests or issues quickly, but there is not a way for administrators to easily see advanced details of the cluster.

VMware vSAN

For an SMB, vSAN and other hyper-converged products seem to provide a cost-benefit especially as it relates to future growth and reduced management. VMware vSAN is not, however, a simple-to-understand product. It can be easy to set up and deploy with the proper understanding, but there are serious complexities that need to be understood and mitigated for you to be successful and very happy with its long term care and operation.

Pros

Scale Computing HC3

  • Simple solution to managing storage, virtualization and snapshots on one page with not more than 3 clicks
  • Excellent technical support with support built into the suite for quick access when required by the Scale Computing Technicians.
  • High performance out of the Flash and Spinning Disks through HyperCore Enhanced Automated Tiering (HEAT)
  • High availability feature helps in ensuring that there is no single point of failure

VMware vSAN

  • I have had zero problems with vSAN storage and don't even think about it on a day-to-day basis.
  • It allows me to throw a bunch of JBODs together and make an enterprise grade SAN out of it.
  • Allows a single pane of glass for managing our virtual infrastructure.

Cons

Scale Computing HC3

  • As with everything, I wish the price was a bit cheaper but by comparison to others but it's not bad when compared to similar solutions.
  • Not that it was needed in my case but the option to have a Scale engineer on site for setup might be nice for some instances.
  • The scheduling of the setup calls and training could be explained a little better and even possibly a quick overview of how to use the scheduling portion of the customer portal.

VMware vSAN

  • It would be nice to have fabric-based storage acceptance to disaggregate storage and expand beyond the node concept. The assumption that increased storage needs require increased compute or ram is simply not true.
  • The licensing costs are high but you do get what you pay for.

Since I have had no issues with downtime; easier management of my cluster and the ability to lower the number of devices in my Infrastructure, I will gladly renew my support contract with Scale Computing HC3 and upgrade my equipment with them when it comes time for it.

I was able to learn how to manage this system in minutes. I can go weeks without touching it and never have a problem. If something comes up like an update, I simply get an email notifying me to login and update my Cluster OS.

We had a lot of interaction with Scale support when we were getting started. Since then, we have only had a few (mostly routine) support issues. Every time, no matter which tech we speak to, we always feel like we are Scale's most important customer. The help we receive is excellent and well-informed. We never get the sense that someone is guessing, and most of the time we receive additional help or insight that increases our knowledge of, and appreciation for, the product. The people at Scale love their product.

It’s the worst from VMware, the best idea is to send your team to training.

Purchasing the migration service or tool if one has older systems, a large number of servers, or coming from another VM solution would be a great advantage.

Alternatives Considered

Scale Computing HC3

We chose Scale primarily because it was a completely self contained system. That meant one vendor and one support contract. Researching the different hardware components required for a vm system and multiple vendors of each component quickly got old. And thinking ahead toward maintaining such a system we did not want to deal with the headache of tracking down which component was causing us trouble and then having to prove that to the vendors.

vSAN is far more integrated than any other SDS solution running on vSphere. It is also a simpler deployment and management model.

HC3 is one of the best products I have purchased for our district. It is unbelievably reliable to the point that they shoot themselves in the foot on support contracts.

Return on Investment

Scale Computing HC3

  • The platform saved us 40% at deployment vs. traditional alternative and was a substantially smaller investment that alternative hyper-convergence solutions with similar performance specifications.
  • We have been able to reduce head-count by one with the HC3 platform in place.
  • We have been able to eliminate the annual licensing cost associated with VMware which added to the ROI of HC3.
Marshall Curtis | TrustRadius Reviewer

VMware vSAN

  • The ROI for VMware vSAN seems very positive. We have yet to need to upgrade since we put it in a few years ago, but without the heavy cost of dedicated storage, we have already seen reduced hardware maintenance costs and reduced management time spent.
  • With the cost of dedicated storage and its separate maintenance costs, all this is rolled back into the hosts. The hosts cost more with drives in them, but not near as much as the separate dedicated storage did.
  • Before VMware vSAN, you had hosts and storage devices aging out, running out of capacity, or underperforming. With vSAN you only have to worry about the hosts.
