Overall Satisfaction with Scale Computing Platform

We use Scale Computing Platform to host our production servers in a virtual environment. The ability to scale out our VMs according to our business needs is a great help. We are a Small-to-Medium Business and the ability to be "hands off" with our hosting platform has been a great help.

Pros

  • Simple UI and Controls
  • Live VM Exporting to File Shares
  • Turns Virtual Environment maintenance into an easier task

Cons

  • Dedicated Lights-Out Solution for low-end systems
  • Ability to replace smaller storage drives with larger ones, rather than requiring the addition of an entire node for storage increases
  • Different UI views for VMs: ability to minimize certain groups and have that persist through log-ins
While the support at Scale Computing Platform is very responsive and quick to point you to their existing resources and answers. I have had personal trouble when trying to receive technical assistance with the product (e.g. Networking, Backup Practices, etc). Overall, I have gotten the answers I need to important topics, but had to compromise in areas of lesser importance.
  • Positive: Having our hardware, software, and support costs under one umbrella makes it easy to track renewals and compare year-to-year costs.
  • Positive: 5-year terms on software/support allows us to essentially depreciate costs over a longer period.
  • Negative: In order to upscale our cluster, we cannot add individual components to our nodes like with other competitors. The cost of adding a node just to get additional storage or memory can be painful.
As mentioned previously, not having to worry about the compatibility between your hardware, hypervisor, and VM OS is a great help. On the downside, there is less ability to get deep in the weeds with your own system. Much of the Scale HyperCore OS is locked down intentionally, which prevents technical users from having much insight on broad error messages without support intervention.

Do you think Scale Computing Platform delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Scale Computing Platform's feature set?

Yes

Did Scale Computing Platform live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Scale Computing Platform go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Scale Computing Platform again?

Yes

Scale Computing Platform is excellent for building a virtual environment at a remote location. The ability to have 2TB of storage and 32GB of memory in a single node is effective for most sites. It is less appropriate for environments that rely heavily on virtual desktop. The support for Windows PC OS is not quite where it needs to be for that kind of implementation.
