What is Centrify / Idaptive (discontinued, superseded by Idira Identity Platform)?
Centrify's identity-as-a-service line, which became Idaptive in 2019, was a cloud identity and access management product for workforce users. It provided single sign-on (SSO), adaptive multifactor authentication (MFA), enterprise mobility management, and user behavior analytics. The product is discontinued, and its capabilities are now superseded by the Idira Identity Platform from Palo Alto Networks.
Key Capabilities
- Single sign-on: A single set of credentials gave users access to multiple applications.
- Adaptive multifactor authentication: Authentication requirements adjusted to the risk of the user and device.
- Enterprise mobility management: Management of mobile devices that access enterprise resources.
- User behavior analytics: Detection of risky behavior, with the product reacting when it was detected.
- Identity lifecycle management: Later coverage describes Idaptive as a provider of SSO, MFA, and identity lifecycle management services.
- Access model: Idaptive's approach, which it called next-gen access, focused on determining the authenticity of a digital user and their device, governing access across a customer's resources, and reacting to risky behavior. Press coverage describes it as taking a zero-trust approach to identity security.
- Compliance: At the 2019 spin-out, the company stated that it would maintain the controls then deployed in Centrify, so that it could document SOC 2 compliance.
Audience & Use Cases
- Audience: Enterprise IT and security teams managing workforce access. The sources I read name no roles, so this is inferred from the features.
- Use Case: Giving employees single sign-on to cloud and on-premises applications.
- Use Case: Requiring additional authentication when a user, device, or behavior looks risky.
- Use Case: Managing the mobile devices employees use to reach enterprise resources.
Discontinuation and Successor
Idaptive's identity services are discontinued, and their capabilities are now superseded by the Idira Identity Platform, which Palo Alto Networks sells following its acquisition of CyberArk. Idira's identity and access management offering lists device access, password management, SSO, adaptive MFA, passwordless authentication, and session management. Buyers can evaluate Idira, other identity and access management products, or any other option they choose. Centrify's separate privileged access management business did not move to Idira: it continued as Delinea, whose Centrify page lists Server PAM and Vault Suite as its Centrify products.
