Kanopy expands its global footprint significantly in recent years, and the business was looking for a global payment processing solution that would allow customers to easily make payments thru a portal to local bank accounts without incurring any fees on their end. We specifically were looking to integrate payment processing directly into the web portal that customers use for Kanopy. The goal was to minimize more expensive credit card payments and also convert customers who still pay by check to ACH / direct debit. Kanopy has 2 options for invoicing, a direct 'shopping cart' method to pay upon purchase or an end-of-month invoicing based on usage. Integrating GoCardless would allow customers who purchase via shopping cart to pay via other methods than simply credit card, which is cheaper for Kanopy.
Pros
Onboarding and implementation process.
Customer integration for software that can't connect "out of the box".
Customer service (specifically with technical issues and troubleshooting).
Cons
Pricing structures - very specific to each user and seems to vary greatly.
Add additional countries to supported list for bank accounts.
Adoption strategies for users' customers.

We believe GoCardless is the best-in-class solution for global companies who wish to streamline payment processing in many countries, especially when integrating within a company website or supported complementary software. It also works very well for recurring payment situations as it can be very streamlined for recurring & auto-payments. This is NOT a tool for credit card processing, so understand that and consider something like Stripe if credit card integration is your goal. The fees for GoCardless may be highly dependent on the anticipated processing volume and size of your business, so do know that very tiny companies may find the fee structure to be higher. For a US-only business, I'm not sure if GoCardless really would make the most sense outside of specifically for integrating within the software for click-thru payment processing. Where GoCardless shines is when your business operates in many countries and is looking for a seamless solution for your customers that also avoids them paying banking fees.
2 years back, one of our clients was looking for payment gateways to receive the payments through direct debit. Since my client was a small business and many of its customers are not that tech-savvy, we decided to set up the dd through GoCardless solely because of the low membership fee. This turned out to be our best decision as GoCardless was quick & easy to set up the platform and integrated well with lots of different website landing pages to process payment.
Pros
Real time status of direct debit payments
Homepage dashboard is well made and efficiently tracks the payment status
GoCardless website supports multiple language
Cons
Reconciliation of balance could be expedited
Didn't get data of customers who cancels their payment
Likelihood to Recommend
I think it's a great payment gateway for small businesses which are new to the business and looking for something low budget & an easy-to-use platform to begin accepting the payments. It does streamline the cash flow & gives good visibility to payment status but sometimes it takes 3-4 days in the reconciliation of balances which might not be suitable for businesses looking to have a quick turn-around-time of balances.
Most of my business' income is monthly recurring payments, so we use GoCardless to process those payments, rather than relying on customers creating their own standing orders. It fixes the issue of manual payments and also waiting for customers to set up those standing orders. The fees are a little higher than they used to be as they uses to be capped, but they're still very low.
Pros
Reliably takes recurring payments
Makes it easy and secure for customers to set up their direct debits with us
Informs us when payments have failed at the customer's end
Makes it easy to see upcoming payments that will be collected
Cons
Not really useable on mobile - no mobile app and poor display in a mobile browser
Takes a while for the first payment in a DD to come in, although I appreciate that's a limitation of DD rather than a GoCardless issue, it's worth noting compared the credit/debit card alternatives
Likelihood to Recommend
Particularly if you take recurring payments, it's very useful. Also if you want to pay smaller fees compared to credit/debit card alternatives. It's less appropriate if it's important that the first payment arrives immediately, and also if you're looking to connect it with e-commerce platforms - it's not really suited to that.
We use GoCardless to take direct debit payments from customers wishing to pay by installments.
Pros
Makes it easy to set up a series of direct debit payments
Helps us to get paid more reliably
Provides a means to take one-off card payments without having our own card processing facility
Cons
The web-based admin dashboard for setting up direct debits can be a little confusing
Likelihood to Recommend
Some services we provide (e.g., web hosting) are billed on a recurring basis. Operationally, and from an internal point of view, it makes sense to bill these annually. For cash flow, customers prefer to pay monthly, and we use GoCardless to set up monthly direct debit payments against our annual invoices. This keeps our customers happy while giving us our regular income without incurring the administrative overhead of monthly billing and payment handling.
GoCardless is used to provide direct debit payment solutions for our customers across a number of countries which include the UK and Germany. We use it to allow online purchasing and also to allow customers to subscribe to our quarterly subscriptions.
Pros
Awesome API
Excellent documentation
Easy to use dashboard
Cons
Own Magento 2 Extension
Likelihood to Recommend
Perfect for direct debit solutions that work across multiple regions. GoCardless has saved us development costs and made supporting our customers so much easier. Appropriate for EU and now also US.
GoCardless is used as a direct debit service. Clients elect to pay this way. Only the Accounts staff is involved in this aspect of things therefore, it is not used by the entire organization. The problems it addresses revolve around being paid or not. We notice that when clients use this service, we tend to get paid on time. Most clients pay directly, and a smaller proportion use this service, probably equivalent to the amount that pay via credit card
Pros
Direct debit
Xero integration
Notifying clients of impending payments
Cons
Not clear to clients how to cancel a DD.
Hard to get hold of support.
Requires manual setup in Xero, i.e. not 100% straightforward.
Likelihood to Recommend
[GoCardless] is best in any scenario where you are looking for a cost-effective DD solution. It integrates well with Xero. [GoCardless] is not suitable for a roadside fruit stall or kids selling lemonade from their driveway.
We use GoCardless to collect recurring payments from customers and integrate with Xero for reconciliation.
Pros
Ease of use
Integrations
Reliability
Cons
Open banking
Easier refunding process
Likelihood to Recommend
Any recurring payment situation. Offering customers an alternative to credit cards and for businesses to reduce reliance of more expensive card processors.
