Mattermost User Review

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We handle a lot of PII for our customers since we run credit checks and also access their mortgage information. We want to have a secure way of instantly and securely share documents to different members of the team, especially those who are on site or working from home. Most of the mesaging apps do have that feature but I guess because of the number of users we have experienced significant delays in sending messages.

Pros

  • Easy intergration to our main CRM (Monday.com)
  • I'm not techy myself but I have seen a lot of our previous integrations in Slack transferred over to Mattermost so that's fun
  • The desktop and phone app (android) works well enough. I haven't tried it on the Apple ecosystem yet.

Cons

  • We just use it for file sharing and messaging, it was not so hard to transition to it from Slack. The app is laggy sometimes, but that is to be expected I guess.

Likelihood to Recommend

I think if you are starting out in messaging apps like this, it's a pretty great start. User friendly and easy to navigate. However if you're used to a certain messaging environment it may not work for you because it's not really heavy on features. I like that about it though, because it's strictly a business messaging app.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

I use Mattermost mainly for team communication and colabs such as messaging, file sharing, and project management. It's most helpful for file sharing while being remote.

Pros

  • Threaded conversations that keeps discussions on specific topics organized and prevent important information from getting lost in a stream of messages.
  • Integration with tools like Office 365 for file sharing and collaboration
  • clean, intuitive user interface that is easy to navigate

Cons

  • Advanced search could be better and it seems a bit slow
  • audio and video conferencing tools could be better
  • more granular control of notifications

Likelihood to Recommend

Mattermost is well suited for medium sized remote orgs but I think may be overkill for smaller orgs

Mattermost is great for collaboration and communication

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

It supports the communication aspect of project management. The collaboration of the teams and management is the most important in an organization and it's best in cases of multiple teams and bigger projects because it helps in WBS.

Pros

  • Team Collaboration
  • Communication
  • Multi Platform Support
  • Security
  • Screen Sharing
  • Self Hosted
  • Desktop and Mobile App

Cons

  • Call glitches sometimes
  • Limitations on File Sharing
  • UI can be improved although it's simple for new users
  • Its own video conferencing has limitations of users
  • Search feature can be made better

Likelihood to Recommend

We use Mattermost for team communication. When it comes to the call where you require you cannot have everyone on the call, because it has limitations and it requires some work and glitches with the conversation. But overall it can do well when it comes to aligning your projects and updates.

A secure alternative to using Slack and Teams

Rating: 7 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our organization is trying to achieve SOC 2 compliance right now. Many of our clients are government contractors, so it is imperative that passwords and government information is not leaked. We tested it with just a handful of employees at first to see how easy it would be to deploy on-prem. The main idea was to have a communication platform that is more secure to achieve compliance.

Pros

  • It can be deployed to a secure on-prem Linux Server
  • It meets many of the checklists for Cybersecurity Insurance
  • The ease of use for new users is good. The layout is self-explanatory

Cons

  • There is no free version to at least try out the service
  • The cost is much higher than using the Microsoft equivalent
  • We could not find a way to communicate over video using the platform

Likelihood to Recommend

If you are an MSP that is looking to become a MSSP, this is a product to consider. You can run the application on a Linux server that is in your datacenter. From there, you can lock down the server so that it can only be accessed from an internal IP versus having an external IP open to the world. This makes it easier to prove you are SOC 2 compliant and able to complete the Insurance Cybersecurity checklist for Government clients. It is not appropriate for just an alternative to Teams that will be cheaper.

Mattermost is what matters most!

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Mattermost is very beneficial when you have departments that collaborate on internal documentation together. There are many features in addition to that but the most important one, for us, is a central hub designed to bring our departments, tools, and information to the rest of the organization. Very useful tool.

Pros

  • Sharing Information
  • Securing Information
  • Coloration on Information

Cons

  • UI is very technical
  • Simple Layouts can be introduced
  • Internal Sharing via Public Link

Likelihood to Recommend

Mattermost is all dependent on what type of organization you are apart of. Yes it is good for internal documentation and collaboration, however, if you do not rely on a space to collaborate on then this might not be a tool you acquire however if you have multiple departments collaborating on information, then it is worth exploring.

Stellar internal communication and all-in-one task workflows tool!

Rating: 9 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use it as our internal communication tool / main messaging platform. We find it to be a very flexible tool that we can adjust for the specific needs of our organization. We use it for all things communication and basically only use email for outside parties. I think it is so much better than microsoft teams and other tools like that!

Pros

  • Messaging
  • Saving Messages for Later
  • Sharing files

Cons

  • maintentance (since it's open source IT needs to invest more in keeping it in good shape)
  • third party integrations (less features than slack)
  • It's a little less visually polished than big tech platforms

Likelihood to Recommend

It's really great if you want more control of the tool to abe able to customize it to the needs of your specific organizations. Sometimes off the shelf options don't work for all orgs.

Control your ChatOps Data with Mattermost

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

<div>Mattermost is used by the infrastructure team as the main communication platform. It's also used for alert aggregation and chat-ops like functionality.

</div><div>Using google chat before left a lot of gaps for team collaboration and chat-ops functionality. The value of being able to search past messages has also been extremely useful. This product also is open source which is part of the IT organizations values.

</div>

Pros

  • Chat and chat groups functionality
  • Simple and robust webhooks
  • Easy to use and understand web interface
  • Easily searchable chats and groups

Cons

  • Update process isn't as streamlined as I would like
  • Not as easy to integrate outside services as other chat platforms
  • Using a third party identity wasn't straightforward or was costly
  • This might have changed but RBAC style access controls were quite limited

Likelihood to Recommend

This is an excellent open source chat platform for small to medium teams. I can't see it working well at a massive scale due to having a smaller set of permissions and security settings. It is very nice to own the data that backs the chats and files. It would be nice to have more of the meeting style features built in as well as greater integration with something like nextcloud or similar tools.

Mattermost for data security and transparency

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

Our operation had employees and freelancing contractors and we used Mattermost to facilitated the communication while restricting the freelancers' access to some specific information and groups. I didn't have access to the product on an admin level, but it was clear to everyone that it came as an easier option to set up.

Pros

  • Easy to set up
  • Control over who has access
  • Best option on a cost benefit perspective

Cons

  • The tool and support was entirely in English
  • No built-in video chat

Likelihood to Recommend

I used Mattermost on a full remote company and it perfectly suited our collaboration and communication culture. The company dealt with privileged and personal information of a huge data base of users, so it was a significant advantage for our need to comply with industry regulations.
