Excellent tool for resource management and alerts

Rating: 8 out of 10

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We work with a different e-commerce clients and we need a way to monitor their servers, checking resource usage and service status, to be able to be proactive and solve any issue that may happen on production and development environments. New Relic allows us to configure very precise alerts and monitoring features, and offers lots of ways to deliver those alerts and updates.

Pros

  • AWS resource monitoring
  • Flexibility in types and parameters of alerts
  • Integration with messaging platforms

Cons

  • Monitoring based on customer data
  • Custom services monitoring

Likelihood to Recommend

New Relic its an excellent tool for monitoring services used on the SAAS universe, like web servers, relational and nosql dbms, reverse proxies, text databases, etc. Its also a powerful tool to monitor resource usage on said servers.

However, its not well fitted to monitor custom services - if you need to generate alerts based on logs or database information, for example.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

New Relic is the main Observability tool in our organization. We are using New Relic in so many types of business and technical problems those are like Infrastructure monitoring, Frontend monitoring, Backend Monitoring, Database Monitoring, Network monitoring and also Business data monitoring like Trend of revenue, Login failures of any applications etc. With the help of New Relic we can easily monitor the exact problem statement like where is the exact issue, when it occurs and what is the possible way to resolve that. It also helps us to monitor the revenue growth as well as we are also using this to monitor the count of active and inactive users.

Pros

  • Its Kubernetes monitoring feature, through the help of New Relic K8s monitoring feature we just need to run a single command in the K8s environment then it will gives use all the data related to that cluster We don't have to add any other agent on that like other tolls and also it has default dashboards for the Kubernetes which helps us to easily monitor the K8s.
  • New Relic's Dashboarding feature which helps us to visualize the data in a better way, It has a wide range of default widget types as well as custom widget types. It also supports the custom visualization through Nerdpack which helps us to show the data in a better way.
  • The pipeline control feature of New Relic which they have recently launched, it helps us to control the data flow to New Relic as per our requirements which is used to reduce the ingestion cost. Due to this we can also increases the focus on the exact data points.

Cons

  • NRQLs of New Relic taking too much time to show the data, so I believe Relic can improve on this. As NRQLs are playing a big role in New Relic which helps us to show the data, but due to its slow performance it is taking to much time to create any valid dashboard.
  • The distributed tracing feature of New Relic, currently it supports only for APM, Browser, functions, Lambda. So New Relic can expand the distributed tracing capabilities for other services as well.

Likelihood to Recommend

I have used New Relic in so many different scenarios like infrastructure monitoring, network monitoring, application monitoring etc., mainly I am using this for Kubernetes monitoring. Its Kubernetes integration is so simple as compare to other O11y tools. In New Relic we just have to run one helm command on cluster and then it will automatically collects all the data of Kubernetes cluster like pods, nodes etc. which helps us alot. Apart from this I also used New Relic to monitor AWS services health and its performance.

Cons

  • I have seen, since last few days New Relic is taking so much time to show the output of any NRQL query leading to much frustration for the engineer to getting the RCA. I think New Relic can improve on this as earlier it was working completely fine.
  • While New Relic offers a wide range of integrations with popular platforms like AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, and various databases, not all third-party systems are equally supported, which can lead to partial observability in complex or mixed environments.

Likelihood to Recommend

We have deployed multi-tiered application with the having setup the monitoring for the different components like backend, fronted, Network monitoring and Infrastructure monitoring, with the help of New Relic we were able to setup the monitoring for all the above component, and we are managing it on a single platform optimizing the all over performance of the application helps to get the client appreciation as well.

End-to-end monitoring and automation for efficiency and performance gain

Rating: 8 out of 10
Incentivized

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

we monitor our energy management systems, assuring the realtime integrity of Big Data we generate from IoT devices and SCADA networks. It allows us to catch underperformance as soon as possible, reduce downtime, and ensure system availability. We use its APM and infrastructure monitoring for to enable energy audits, load forecasting, and keep our client facing analytics dashboards running smooth.

Pros

  • New Relic APM allows us to follow up transactions across services and trace performance bottlenecks in real-time, crucial when monitoring the processing of energy loads or predictive maintenance algorithms.
  • It gives us deep visibility into our cloud servers, containers and IOT gateways, so we can catch CPU spikes or memory leaks which can impact the data we ingest from the field devices.
  • We develop custom dashboards for monitoring trends of power consumption, abnormality in sensors and API health. In conjunction with alerting, it makes sure we are fixing issues before customers even see them.

Cons

  • And while powerful, building tailored dashboards with organ-specific metrics (such as energy load variance across regions) can be difficult to navigate. The UI isn't as drag-and-drop easy, and query-based widgets typically involve some trial and error for non-devs.
  • Alerts may be hypersensitive or over general. I We often get a spam of non-critical alerts while doing load testing, all overhauling to me alone and making it difficult to identify actual issues especially in energy systems where spikes are very common.
  • With our expanding fleet of Iot devices, the per-host pricing model is becoming expensive, quickly. More detailed billing based on microservices, or that works at sensor level, would make it more adaptable for energy platforms.

Likelihood to Recommend

It is perfect for observing our energy platforms during high-load situations, such as grid demand spikes, or our real-time ingest of sensor data, allowing us to respond in real time to anomalies. And it’s a good way to monitor API performance in client dashboards, too. But it’s not as conducive for low-budget/low-code work or deep customization that doesn’t get ample development support given its complexity and expense.
