Scale Computing offers edge computing, virtualization, and hyperconverged solutions for customers around the globe. Scale Computing HyperCore software promises to eliminate traditional virtualization software, disaster recovery software, servers, and shared storage, replacing these with a fully integrated, highly available system for running applications. The vendor says that, using patented HyperCore™ technology, the SC//HyperCore self-healing platform automatically identifies, mitigates, and corrects problems in the infrastructure in real-time, enabling applications to achieve maximum uptime even when local IT resources and staff are scarce. Use Cases and Deployment Scope

We use Scale Computing Platform to host our production servers in a virtual environment. The ability to scale out our VMs according to our business needs is a great help. We are a Small-to-Medium Business and the ability to be "hands off" with our hosting platform has been a great help.

Ability to replace smaller storage drives with larger ones, rather than requiring the addition of an entire node for storage increases
Different UI views for VMs: ability to minimize certain groups and have that persist through log-ins

Return on Investment

Positive: Having our hardware, software, and support costs under one umbrella makes it easy to track renewals and compare year-to-year costs.
Positive: 5-year terms on software/support allows us to essentially depreciate costs over a longer period.
Negative: In order to upscale our cluster, we cannot add individual components to our nodes like with other competitors. The cost of adding a node just to get additional storage or memory can be painful.

Scale Platform allowed us to migrate several of our aging bare metal systems to a virtualized environment that allowed us greater redundancy, lower operating costs, and easier management. Despite being a small company, we had many initiatives that required in-house systems for development and production. Additionally, a reluctance to move our services to the cloud prompted us to run the services we needed (email, file services, database services) on systems we personally maintained. The use of Scale provided a more efficient and cost-effective solution for managing the individual group of on-premise systems.

Cons

Better efficiency of resources use for the purpose of being able provision the systems in the cluster with fewer resources but still support failover to two of the three systems in the cluster.

More robust redundancy with network architecture.

Use Cases and Deployment Scope

As the Automation Professional for a large pasta manufacturer, I use the SCALE computing platform to host all of the plant's automation servers. As a 24/7-363 operation, these systems are critical for our day-to-day operations. We have been using the SCALE computing system for five years and have found it to be reliable, easy to operate, and manageable. In the rare case when I've had to call for technical support, the service has been prompt and professional. I would highly recommend SCALE Computing and their products!

Scale Computing Platform has replaced our previous environment which was a mixture of physical servers and a different, more complicated virtual environment. The previous environment was harder to use, and used quite a bit more energy, which once caused a power surge that forcefully powered down everything. Since switching to Scale Computing Platform, the environment is easy to use and manage, we have lower electricity costs, and any issues that have occurred were handled quickly and easily by support. We recently replaced our Scale Computing Platform cluster with a newer version, and the process was seamless.

Pros

Simplicity - I do not have to create storage buckets or micromanage anything.
Efficiency - Lower power use since moving to a hyperconverged environment.
Scalability - Adding additional hardware is easy, and increasing things like the amount of RAM or number of cores is easy.

Cons

I would like to see an option to schedule updates to occur outside of business hours without manual intervention.
The used disk space gauge for each VM is not accurate.
The virtio drivers worked rather poorly with the anti-virus product we recently switched to. We had to switch drivers.
