Overall Satisfaction with Amazon Redshift

It is used within a few departments. It is used to solve certain legacy problems that have not yet been ported over to other more suitable approaches.

Pros

  • Large scale SQL
  • Standard SQL

Cons

  • Handline full text queries
  • Sampling
  • Bonafide indexes
  • Provide query interface that can store queries and run long-running queries, then notify the user
  • Redshift leapfrogged Hive, providing a more stable, standardized, and scalable solution for querying server logs and raw usage data. This simplified data infrastructure while improving usability for users who are not on engineering staff as well as for power users.
Redshift leapfrogged Hive back when Hive was trying to figure out how to implement indexes, providing a more stable, standardized (postgres), easy to use (any postgres client), easier to administer, and scalable solution for querying server logs and raw usage data.

Now, Snowflake has surpassed Redshift in usability and scalability.
