Overall Satisfaction with Automox

We leverage Automox to stay on top of patching compliance for our Linux servers running in AWS. While a majority of our services are containerized, we have a few persistent workloads that need to run on traditional EC2 hardware. Automox handles the scheduling, application, and reporting for our VMs in the cloud.

Pros

  • Ease of endpoint registration
  • Device group creation, policy definition, and application
  • Ease of reporting for auditors or internal stakeholders

Cons

  • There exists an issue where you register some Amazon AMIs, which in even samples of 4 or 5, sometimes contain a duplicate identifier. Automox has provided a fix document, but it requires manual intervention and digging to discover this. I think they should identify a better way to assign UUIDs to machines, as sometimes registering too many VMs makes others "fall off"
  • Allow for multiple global admins
  • Being a start up, we have pivoted our strategies a number of times. The pay as you go model has worked very well for us, and has prevented us from overprovisioning
  • The time saved pulling reports to provide to auditors has been well worth our small spend on the solution
  • We have no need to maintain a scanning tool or invest in hardware thanks to the SaaS nature of Automox
Automox got us into a set it and forget it mentality. For our limited server stack, I have gone whole quarters without thinking about the tool or logging into the interface. Each time I have checked the platform, I see the history of the past 3 months of patches being applied, and the reporting to support that.
It truly functions like a single pane of glass. While our use case is for EC2 instances in AWS, it can manage endpoints across all clouds, or even deployed hardware (laptops). We do manage instances in multiple AWS accounts and there is no set up required between orgs. This accomplishes our needs for real time tracking, and historical reporting for all of our in scope resources.
While not a direct analog, we have noted that our A/V provider also handles patching. That being said, the solution is not as al la carte as Automox, and requires much more thought to implement. Automox is a favorite for its lightweight nature and it's time to implementation being measured in minutes, not hours or days.

Do you think Automox delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Automox's feature set?

Yes

Did Automox live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Automox go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Automox again?

Yes

Automox is great for companies that need an automated patching solution in next to no time. Given that it's cloud based, and I don't believe it sets cronjobs or triggers directly on the machines, it would not be well suited for patching and scheduling jobs for systems that are not always online.
