Overall Satisfaction with Automox

Automox is used in our environment primarily as a patch management solution to mitigate security vulnerabilities and keep operating and third-party software up to date. Several maintenance worklets have been deployed to maintain system health. Several worklets targeting security settings and compliance checks have also been deployed. Automox has become the preferred system for quickly remedying vulnerabilities and ensuring endpoints are deployed according to a baseline configuration. If a system is missing required software, such as vulnerability management or endpoint detection and response agents, Automox can automatically remediate the system.

Pros

  • Patching the operating system.
  • Patching third party software.
  • Ensuring required software are installed and healthy.
  • Ensuring baseline security settings are enabled and in effect.
  • Running maintenance tasks on a schedule to clean up temp files or obsolete user profiles.

Cons

  • Server patching orchestration. There is no way to patch and reboot systems in order of importance, such as database servers before application servers.
  • Worklets for patching .net core and similar.
  • Worklets for removing unwanted Java installs or other unwanted software.
  • AI script development should be included at no additional cost; GPT or Gemini can be used instead for free and pasted into Automox. Why charge when others are free?
  • Official worklets are slow to be added or updated.
  • We wanted to like the remote support software, but the experience was poor compared to a solution like BeyondTrust.
  • Development and deployment of worklets is fast for experienced coders.
  • Policy execution and reporting is fast and reliable.
  • The new analytics dashboard excels at reporting Mean Time to Remediation for executive reporting purposes.
Our old patch management solution would take months to patch all systems because users often did not bring their systems into the office. Since Automox works both connected and disconnected from our network, we can patch a larger percentage of systems per month in a faster timeframe. Our Mean Time to Remediation (MTTR) is now less than 5 days, and our vulnerability management software indicates a significant decrease in overall vulnerabilities for supported software. However, there are still many applications that require separate patching using other methods, such as vendor-provided automatic updates or custom worklets.
It takes some time to understand groups and policies. However, the Automox University training does a great job of teaching the fundamentals of using the solution. From purchase to agent deployment, we were fully operational, patching software across the majority of our workstations in just a few days.

Do you think Automox delivers good value for the price?

Yes

Are you happy with Automox's feature set?

Yes

Did Automox live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Automox go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Automox again?

Yes

Automox is well-suited for managing workstations but lacks flexibility for server environments.
It excels in scenarios where systems may not regularly connect to the corporate network but have internet access, ensuring devices can still check in and receive timely patches. This provides organizations with confidence in maintaining patch compliance across remote endpoints.
However, effective use of Automox requires staff who are proficient in PowerShell scripting. The platform has limited native support for third-party applications, often requiring custom worklets to manage software updates. It performs best in environments that primarily rely on widely used, off-the-shelf software.
