Overall Satisfaction with BigCommerce

Bigcommerce is our exclusive ecommerce platform. It is used across the entire organization to manage the website from the customer facing experience to order processing, fulfillment and shipping. It has allowed us to quickly get a store online without needing a lot of technical expertise or invest a lot of money into a custom solution.
  • Responsive customer service with multiple ways to contact them, phone, chat and email.
  • A lot of functionality out of the box
  • Very customizable to your specific business, especially if you have some web development skills
  • The amount of features it has can be overwhelming and make the product feel clunky, complicated and slow
  • They are playing catch up in terms of offering more modern theming
  • Creating your own themes is possible but it is not easy to do and is tedious, even if you have the technical chops
  • They recently deprecated FTP and am using WebDAV, which is much slower and isn't supported by many tools
  • Bigcommerce had a lot of functionality we were missing from Shopify, especially around coupons, so it had a huge impact from allowing us to customize our marketing to what we needed.
  • It's hard to manage inventory and a large amount of products with Bigcommerce, so I would say there is a negative ROI on that. There's a lot they could do to improve usability
We used Shopify before switching to Bigcommerce. Shopify had really limited functionality to customize coupons, which were essential to our marketing activities. It also was a lot more expensive for the amount of business we were doing on it. We looked into other solutions but either they were much more complex and had high technical requirements, or seemed too simple for our growing business.
If you're just starting out, Bigcommerce probably is overkill, but if you have a lot of SKUs and have moderate resources Bigcommerce can do almost everything you need. If you want a lot of control and want to be able to easily do custom marketing campaigns, you might want to invest in something more customizable, but if you don't have the technical resources for it, Bigcommerce is good enough. I would recommend Bigcommerce to any company that is past their initial success and is looking to grow into a serious ecommerce company.

Using BigCommerce

We've hit the ceiling of what we can do with Bigcommerce, but are happy with it. Our only alternative right now is a custom built solution, so we're likely to be using Bigcommerce for a long time to come until we feel its worth it to create and support a website on our own.
