The previous company I worked for was a BigCommerce Reseller and Partner. Each department utilized BigCommerce for different purposes. The Sales department would recommend BigCommerce to business owners if their needs were well matched up with BigCommerce features. Marketing would on occasion post blogs about new BigCommerce features or releases whereas our developers and designers used BigCommerce in designing and coding their websites. For us,it offered a great premade solution and saved a lot of time in building custom store platforms, which are not always necessary for small solutions.
  • Simple and easy to use interface. This is great for people that aren't very tech savvy.
  • Built in marketing tools like coupons and meta tag fields to help optimize the store.
  • Greater design flexibility. Internal pages such as category and product pages are easier to stylize and customize compared to other platforms.
  • Product page variations can be a little tedious to set up.
  • Email subscription lists are limited though integrations with other newsletter providers are coming soon.
  • From a Programmer's standpoint, BigCommerce is a joy to build widgets within if it's supported by the API, if it's not supported within the API, you'll have no luck building it.
  • Faster lead conversion
  • Increased support
  • Volusion,Magento,Foxycart
BigCommerce is always the go to if you're looking for a very stylized, custom branded website from head to toe. Volusion has been my preference for any projects that require higher levels of custom development, as it's backend is a little bit more lenient. Magento has been great for larger solutions and bigger projects.
BigCommerce is continually making improvements and releasing new features so I see a lot of growth potential within the company.
For any business owner that has relatively simple needs, I highly recommend BigCommerce for the built in features and tools it offers. If you're looking for a solution that is more custom in nature and is a more enterprise solution, then BigCommerce may not suit your needs best. As mentioned previously, custom development can either be an elegant process or just not-doable, so if your project entails heavy custom development, you may want to think twice about using BigCommerce.
