Overall Satisfaction with Camtasia

It is currently being used by myself to produce lecture videos for my courses. I teach using the flipped classroom model and having students watch lectures at home frees up classroom time for me to provide the students with classroom time for discussions, collaborative group work, projects, and even daily homework. When students have time in class to do those application and higher level activities, they also have access to me to answer questions, make clarifications, and provide just in time teaching.
  • Great for screen capture recording (screencasting).
  • Ability to edit post production including call outs, highlights, and titles.
  • Can embed questions into the video.
  • Great support and training videos available from TechSmith.
  • Free trials available to see if you want to make the decision to purchase.
  • Might be intimidating for beginners.
  • Some might be put off by the cost, but capabilities are worth it.
  • For me, it has been great at freeing up class time for other activities.
  • It has helped me train staff on other technology that we use by allowing me to produce training videos.
  • It has helped with parent involvement, they watch the lecture videos as well.
  • Special education loves the videos, because the student can watch the lecture multiple times, and so can they.
  • Screencastify and Screencast-o-matic
Both offer free versions but the costs associated with those will surpass the cost of Camtasia and they do not offer as many tools or options. For the price, it is much more powerful than other options. If you want you videos to look and sound nice, you have to do post production editing and enhancing. Others do not come close.
I recommend it to other teachers wanting to do flipped or blended learning all the time. (To colleagues that I work with, and at conferences, I have presented at). I have had three instances where I presented conference sessions and a workshop on screencasting for which TechSmith provided a free giveaway copy.
