Overall Satisfaction with Datadog

We use Datadog (DD) to collect custom metrics about how our internal services work. Datadog has been critical to help understand system behaviour and trace issues in a manner that I've never seen possible with other kinds of tooling.

Pros

  • Very good at structured logging
  • collecting custom metrics about different services
  • Datadog's APM sampling is very, VERY helpful. It has revealed many useful insights for us!

Cons

  • I had a lot of trouble configuring database monitoring with Datadog
  • the mechanism to direct logs from AWS Fargate into Datadog is very ... convoluted
  • has helped reduce the time to investigate different issues
Datadog is straight-forward to integrate with libraries or systems it's already familiar with. But when we've got a very old system that we need insights into, the documentation of how to perform the Datadog integration is lacking. I wish those were better.
I think Datadog and Sentry serve different needs. I like Sentry to keep track of errors on our systems. And then I'll jump into Datadog to investigate those issues.

Do you think Datadog delivers good value for the price?

Not sure

Are you happy with Datadog's feature set?

Yes

Did Datadog live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of Datadog go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy Datadog again?

Yes

Datadog is very helpful to understand system behaviour. At a base level, just add its integrations to different services and you'll get a lot of data. At the next level, it is helpful to think about linking different services (perhaps via tagging?) to allow Datadog to understand those links and help trace the flow of data as it travels between different systems.
