Dropbox is a great data storage and management program!
Overall Satisfaction with Dropbox
I use Dropbox to store microscopic images, data analyses from a variety of studies, spreadsheet that manage our purchasing and inventory, methods, manuscripts, and work from my trainees.
Dropbox lets me share the documents I want to share with others, allows select users in my group to access and download important information, update spreadsheets, and the like. It also allows me to store documents for my own use. What I like the most is that I can access it from anywhere I have a computer. It also saves "deleted files" for a certain period of time, so if someone inadvertently deletes a document, I can retrieve it.
Pros
- Great storage site
- You can control access by different individuals
- I can access my files remotely wherever I am with my laptop.
- We can have documents that a group is working on saved in one location
- I can have multiple people manage spreadsheets, and still have the original should a mistake be made.
Cons
- It is a bit hard to find things if the label is unclear.
- I haven't figured out how to "lock" someone out once they have left my work environment.
- Sometimes multiple people are in a document, and it creates conflicted files that can be hard to reconcile.
- Allows me to archive important data.
- Allows me to collaborate with individuals who only have access to one set of working documents.
- I can access my data anywhere.
Google is impossible to organize effectively. It is really not good for what I need. I find it takes me forever to find documents I am pretty sure are in there. Sharing is SOOOO much more difficult.
